"We all made the same mistakes so there wasn't enough thought there and we have to ask ourselves individually why there wasn't enough thought. The crucial thing is to learn your lessons and if we're honest with ourselves we've done that sort of thing batting wise too often.

"What is very frustrating is if we keep making the same mistakes. Losing early wickets is not the way to win one-day internationals and we've done that too often. The England captain admitted Friday's eight-wicket Duckworth/Lewis defeat at the Kensington Oval was both "humiliating and embarrassing" after West Indies raced to their victory target in only 14.4 overs.

England's performance was not helped by four of the top six falling either to a pull or a hook shot and Strauss conceded: "I think the reality is we didn't react well to the wicket.

It has put West Indies 2-1 ahead in the series with two matches remaining and the hosts are strong favourites to add a one-day series success to their unexpected Test series triumph earlier in the tour.

"We've all got to hold our hands up and say that wasn't good enough and remember we're representing our country and He added: "This is where that system should work.

If people have pride in their performances, which I am absolutely certain they do, and I'm very certain that they'll come back and play a lot better on Sunday."we have an obligation to play better than that.""Part of giving the players responsibility is that there are no excuses when we do badly," explained Strauss. "We can't blame the coaches, we can't blame anyone other than ourselves and we each have an individual responsibility to make sure we don't make those mistakes again."

Personally, it was a memorable day for the fast-medium bowler who crossed a personal land mark of 150 wickets in his 47th Test when he had Yuvraj Singh snared by Tim McIntosh at second slip.

"It does pep you up and it is always nice to reach milestones," said martin, who also scalped Dinesh Karthik and VVS Laxman to finish with figures of 3 for 89.

"It is so unfortunate that someone fails in one innings you put pressure on him. He has done tremendously well in both forms of the game. He has won us a Test match against England and played really well in the second Test in Mohali and recently had a wonderful one-day series.

"He is an amazing talent who is potentially a match-winner and one of the best talents India has produced," Laxman said.

Dravid has taken the vast majority of his catches from spinners -- 99 from Anil Kumble and Harbhajan Singh alone -- a feat that Waugh rates highly because there is often less time to react.

Waugh, however, was not ready to judge a slipper on the great catches they take but on the number of catches they dropped.

"I actually think they should have a statistic of how many catches you drop, like baseball - that's probably the best judge of how good a catcher you are," Waugh was quoted as saying by 'Sydney Morning Herald'."Obviously there's reflexes, there's hand-eye co-ordination and there is concentration and you probably need all three in both (batting and fielding)," he said.

Waugh said Australian captain Ricky Ponting, who has racked up 148 catches in 131 Tests, would be the one who can dislodge Dravid.

Among current players, only Graeme Smith (104 catches from 77 Tests) is likely to challenge the top order.

McCullum said despite picking up three Indian wickets today, it would be hard work to get at the Indian batsmen tomorrow.

"It has been a great couple of days, particularly after the disappointment in Hamilton. We were completely outplayed. We never fired a shot.

"So far we have done everything we can and we know tomorrow and the next day is going to be hard work against these guys. But we cant ask for any better position than what we are in at the moment," he said."It has been a long time coming. There was a bit of emotion there as well when I got to three figures. It has been far too long between centuries for my liking. It is nice as well to get it against a side as good as India. It was a good time to bat," he added.

Zaheer hoped things would look better tomorrow"It is a good track. Hopefully, tomorrow will be ours," an optimist Zaheer said after second day's play."It is a team game so I am going to definitely back my team mates. It can happen on the field, you just have to move on." The ace seamer was looking to get the better of Ryder in the rest of the series.

"He has been batting well. I will have to give it to them. It was fun bowling to him and it was good to take up that challenge. But I believe the remaining three innings will hopefully go my way."

"Tomorrow is an important day for us. Hopefully, we will put it together. Things are looking good as (Rahul) Dravid and Sachin (Tendulkar) are batting. We have to win the day and come back right into the Test match," said Zaheer, who returned with three for 129.

But just as he did when reaching his century in Hamilton, the big left-hander was dismissed the very next ball and was clearly furious with himself, slamming his bat into the floor and disconsolately walking off to a standing ovation from the McLean Park crowd.

His 201 was the third highest score by a New Zealander against India, sitting behind Graham Dowling's 239 and Bert Sutcliffe's unbeaten 230.

Khan fully deserved his wicket as he beat both Ryder and Brendon McCullum regularly in a fiery start to the afternoon session by the seamer.Gautam Gambhir followed suit not long after when he lobbed a catch to Vettori from Patel's delivery and Sharma was out for a duck in the penultimate over of the day when he was dismissed lbw from Vettori's delivery.

Khan fully deserved his wicket as he beat both Ryder and Brendon McCullum regularly in a fiery start to the afternoon session by the seamer."It is just that I was angry with myself for getting out the way I did," he added.

The dismissal apart, Ryder was happy to come up with his maiden double century when the team needed it most. "Definitely, it is a good feeling to get my career-best score. I just went out there and stuck to my game plan and that worked for me. The double is really big for me," said Ryder.A tough competitor on the field, Ryder said he was relishing the experience of playing against some Indian cricketers whom he watched on television all his life.

"It is a great experience. They are a world class team and to play against them has been great.

Taylor was also full of praise for Ryder, who scored his second successive Test hundred and was 137 not out at the close.

"I've got to praise Jesse for his maturity and for keeping me going. Hopefully I did the same for him.

"Jesse was a big help throughout the whole innings. He was geeing me on a lot."

Despite the good start, Taylor felt the team would need to add another 200 runs to be competitive against a strong India batting line-up.

"You don't often get 350 on the first day. It's something for the team to be proud of but it's only halfway there," he said.

Nel, who has played 36 Tests and 79 one-day internationals in an 11-year career, will be registered as a 'Kolpak' player after rescinding his Cricket South Africa contract - allowing New Zealand all-rounder Grant Elliott to be employed, as planned, as Surrey's overseas player for the first half of the coming season.

The South African, renowned for his occasionally explosive on-pitch persona, will join a Surrey pace attack already containing Pedro Collins, Chris Jordan, Jade Dernbach, Alex Tudor, Stuart Meaker and Jimmy Ormond.

"I am delighted to be joining Surrey as I enter a new phase of my career," said Nel.

Sachin Tendulkar admits that the current success the Indian team is going through are the most exciting times of his career.

The master batsman, who has 85 international hundreds - 42 in Tests and 43 in ODIs - said team's victory in New Zealand was indeed satisfying.

"It is good for Rahul (Dravid) and myself to be part of a winning team here. We've been here on earlier tours, but it wasn't so good. But it is better late than never.

"It is exciting time for Indian cricket. It has been quite satisfying. The Test victory is very special. We have been able to achieve that in the last few years wherever we have travelled. I am glad that we made it possible here as well," said Tendulkar, who had a strenuous net session at the Eden Park.

MS Dhoni's disposable and the vast experience key players such as Sachin Tendulkar (157 Tests), Rahul Dravid (132), VVS Laxman (103), Virender Sehwag (67) and Zaheer Khan (63) possess, it would be a brave person who backed against the in-form and confident Indians to end their poor run in New Zealand.

Black Caps wicket-keeper Brendon McCullum admits the home side cannot match India for experience but insists they are gaining plenty from the batting master-classes being given by the tourists.

New Zealand's top six - Tim McIntosh (three), Martin Guptill (one), Daniel Flynn (10), Ross Taylor (15), Jesse Ryder (seven) and James Franklin (24) - have just 60 Test caps between them.

Zaheer Khan and Harbhajan Singh took it to the New Zealand bowlers and added a further 20 runs before Harbhajan (16) slashed at one too many and found Daniel Vettori at mid-off, handing Kyle Mills his first wicket of the match. Khan enjoyed two let-offs on his way to a fine half-century that included eight boundaries.

Chris Martin missed one by a mile when the tail-ender was on 22, then Flynn dropped his second of the innings when Khan was on 34. The Indian bowler made the most of it, hitting two successive fours to get himself into the 40s - taking 13 runs off James Franklin in the process - and brought up his third test 50 with a risky single off the same bowler a few overs later that would have resulted in a run-out had the ball not bounced over the wicket. Ishant Sharma lasted just 13 balls before edging one to McCullum off Vettori and the innings was finally wrapped up when Munaf Patel (nine) holed out to Martin at fine leg.

Further discussions are planned after this weekend as they attempt to resolve the conflict before the West Indies fly to England for the start of a two-Test series starting at Lord's on May 7.Bridgetown failed to end the deadlock over money which is allegedly owed to the players and resulted in domestic players going on strike for the first day of the WICB's regional four-day competition.

Kevin Pietersen and then Strauss, England have managed to win only one international match so far this winter - and that after West Indies made an embarrassing Duckworth/Lewis miscalculation in the first one-day international in Guyana last week.

Vaughan nonetheless does not sense there is anything dramatically wrong - and is backing Strauss to get the team back on track in time to face Australia.

"I hope he is going to be captain for the Ashes and well beyond that, because he stability about the team.

"We just have to get that winning momentum back to the team. It will just happen, as long as they keep doing the right things."

"I believe Strauss is the right man and a very, very good leader," he told Sky Sports News.

Harbhajan proved to be New Zealand's chief tormentor on Saturday as he took six for 63 from 28 overs. The 28-year-old dismissed Martin Guptil before stumps on Friday and then Jesse Ryder on Saturday morning before taking three more scalps after lunch and then removing O'Brien in the final session.

The hosts had resumed on Saturday morning on 75 for three with Daniel Flynn on 24 alongside Ross Taylor. The two had made a solid start before Taylor fell for just four when he slashed Munaf Patel's delivery straight to Virender Sehwag at gully.

Ryder came in looking to impose himself immediately as he hit a four off the second ball before hitting another four and six off Zaheer Khan while Flynn reached his third test half century from 118 balls. But Ryder (21) was trapped lbw by Harbhajan leaving the hosts with McCullum and Daniel Vettori as their only recognised batsmen.

New Zealand face an uphill battle to deny India a rare Test series win on New Zealand soil when the teams begin the second Test in Napier on Thursday.

Having claimed their first Test victory in New Zealand in 33 years in emphatic fashion in Hamilton, the visitors are poised to end a run of series defeats dating back to 1967-68.

Given the talent at captain MS Dhoni's disposable and the vast experience key players such as Sachin Tendulkar (157 Tests), Rahul Dravid (132), VVS Laxman (103), Virender Sehwag (67) and Zaheer Khan (63) possess, it would be a brave person who backed against the in-form and confident Indians to end their poor run in New Zealand.

Virender Sehwag took over as captain and the absence of Dhoni did nothing to prevent opening bowlers Zaheer Khan and Ishant Sharma from taking three New Zealand wickets in the first hour.

Ishant had Tim McIntosh (12) caught behind by Dinesh Karthik, while Zaheer bowled Jamie How (one) and had Martin Guptill caught by Sehwag in the gully for eight to leave the hosts floundering.

The scenario was reminiscent of the first Test in the three-match series at Seddon Park when New Zealand never recovered after slumping to 61-6 in the first session of the match.

The 25-year-old Taylor however, chose not to temper his aggressive strokemaking despite the precarious position before lunch, taking New Zealand to 98-3 by the break.

After lunch he produced several anxious moments while on 99 and almost ran out Ryder while searching for a quick single before he brought up his third Test century with an edged drive behind point for his 18th boundary from 151 balls.

Ryder then saw off the hat-trick ball and he and Taylor guided the Black Caps to 98 for three by lunch.

While the Indians enjoyed the upper hand in the morning session, the afternoon belonged to New Zealand's batsmen.Taylor was eventually dismissed for 151, just three runs shy of his highest score of 154 not out which came against England in Manchester last May.

"I haven't had a significant score for a while now and was probably a little bit more nervous than I have been in the past," he admitted.

Flynn, however, may be missing from New Zealand's line-up as he battles with a bruised and swollen left hand.

Yuvraj, already down after dropping Taylor when he was four, then missed another chance from Franklin. The failure brought back memories of the last tour to Australia, when Yuvraj's miserable form with the bat infected his fielding to such an extent that he plummeted to the lower half of one of the worst fielding outfits in the world. India will hope that this time, the mutual deterioration will not repeat itself.

It ended a day when India's bowlers were much too profligate. By far the weakest Test batting outfit in the world except Bangaldesh and Zimbabwe, New Zealand were able to rattle along at almost four runs per over. The Indians were often too short and width was readily offered. Over 85% of Ryder's runs came square of the wicket, and Taylor scored a century in the region alone. Ryder will resume tomorrow on 137, accompanied by Franklin on 26.

Rahul Dravid, who is currently looking for an 182nd Test catch, which would move him ahead of the great Australian slipper Mark Waugh. Harbhajan Singh came on and induced an outside edge from Ryder in his second over. It went between Dravid and Karthik, and the former judged it to be a wicket-keeper's catch. In the meantime the ball had raced away for the boundary for four.

By lunch, New Zealand had galloped along to 3/98 from 26 overs. Both batsmen had scored quickly, although both should have already been removed. Although it was below par for such a pitch, India has squandered a golden opportunity to demoralise the home batsmen on such a placid surface. In reality, the hosts should have been around 5/80.

Zaheer delivery past backward point for his 14th boundary.

Taylor finally departed when he top-edged Harbhajan Singh and was well caught by Yuvraj in the shadows of the main stand in the outfield.

"I'm a bit disappointed I played a reckless shot but at the same time to get the team to where they are after being three for 20-odd was a pretty good effort," Taylor said.India, who won the first Test in Hamilton by 10 wickets, are seeking their first series win in New Zealand since 1968 but were dealt a blow when captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni sustained a back injury during the warm-up and was replaced by Dinesh Karthik."We knew it was a pretty good wicket once the new ball lost its shine, we knew if we played straight...it's a pretty fast scoring ground," Taylorsaid.

Khan struck again at the start of his next over when Martin Guptill tried to fend off a bouncer only to see the ball fly to gully where Virender Sehwag, taking over the captaincy duties, took a diving catch.

Ryder then saw off the hat-trick ball and he and Taylor guided the Black Caps to 98 for three by lunch.

While the Indians enjoyed the upper hand in the morning session, the afternoon belonged to New Zealand's batsmen.

In the fourth over after the interval Taylor brought up his half-century with his 11th four of the innings and three overs later Ryder joined him when he struck a boundary through cover to bring up his 52.Taylor moved quickly into the 90s with three successive boundaries off Yuvraj, although the last one was somewhat streaky as he was dropped by Rahul Dravid at first slip.

Zaheer hit 8 fours in his half-century to stretch India's lead to 241 runs and frustrate New Zealand who were looking to wrap up the Indian innings after dismissing Harbhajan Singh (16) and Ishant Sharma (6).

The end of the Indian first innings came when Munaf Patel (9) tried to slog sweep a Daniel Vettori delivery by one hand and was caught at fine leg by Chris Martin, leaving Zaheer unbeaten on 51.

Harbhajan hit a six and 2 fours before hitting a Kyle Mills delivery to mid-off where Kiwi skipper Daniel Vettori dived to his left to take the catch. Ishant hit one four before Vettori had him caught behind by Brendon McCullum.

Shortly before that, Iain O'Brien ended Sachin Tendulkar's magnificent innings to reduce India to 443/7.

O'Brien got the prized wicket when Tendulkar edged a bouncer to first slip for Ross Taylor to take the catch. Tendulkar was looking to play the delivery on the leg side but the ball left him and took the edge.

England coaches tinkered with his action fearing it would lead to serious injury problems, but Anderson has now returned to what comes naturally and said: "I'm very pleased with the way it's gone. I think I've been bowling well for a reasonable amount of time now and I've got some consistency going, which I've been searching for the last few years."

He added: "I probably haven't got the wickets during the winter I'd have liked to, but I felt like I've been bowling well.

"I can't think of a reason why I'm not getting the wickets. Virender Sehwag, who took over the captaincy duties in the absence of the injured Mahendra Singh Dhoni, felt it had been a tough day for his bowlers, who were not helped by several dropped catches.

"We knew it was a good track and that someone would get a hundred here. If we'd taken that Taylor catch it would have been 25 for four," he said.

He added: "It's tough for the bowlers. It's not easy to bowl on one line or length because the ball is coming on to the bat and with the fast outfield the batsmen can play their shots and it goes through the gap.

"It's difficult to set the field for someone who is playing shots. It's a good track to bat on. They is nothing for the bowlers so hopefully we will do well during out batting time."

India will be unchanged from the first Test, which they won convincingly by 10 wickets.

In recent times, India have trounced the West Indies (Trinidad, 2002), beaten Pakistan in their backyard (2004-05), humbled the Australians in their outback (Adelaide 2003-04 and Perth 2007-08), bearded the English lion in its own den (2007) and tamed the South Africans (2007).

And if the current bunch can't achieve what Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi's men did in 1967-68, India will certainly find it tough to conquer the Kiwis in their own den when the Sachin Tendulkars, the Rahul Dravids, the VVS Laxmans and the Zaheer Khans are gone.In contrast to India's three-seamer, one-spinner combination, New Zealand have packed their attack with two spinners and three seamers for the contest at the McLean Park.

Dhoni said his job of planning has been made easier by an on-a-roll batting line-up and an effective bowling attack.

"The stress is on execution of plans rather than making too many plans. It is important that the batsmen and bowlers do their job. It gets very easy when each and everyone is performing at his best. "We have done that throughout the series and if continue to do so in the next couple of games it will be good for us," said Dhoni.

The Indian skipper was not hassled by the condition of the wicket, a part of which was infected by fungus.

"I have not had a look at it. But have read a few headlines and fungus affecting the wicket. It won't make a difference," said Dhoni, who said he was focussed on completing the series win here itself before the team heads to Wellington for the third Test early next month.

But Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni doesn't see the need to add an extra spinner.

"We have been quite comfortable with 3-1 combination. When it comes to three seamers and one spinner, we have part timers who have proved that they can get wickets in Test cricket also. You have Virender Sehwag, Yuvraj Singh, and Sachin Tendulkar who can bowl if it is turning," said Dhoni.

But strengthening their bowling is unlikely to serve New Zealand much as it is their inexperienced batting which let them down at Hamilton. This victory would give the visitors their first series triumph in New Zealand in 41 years.

Leading 1-0 in the three-match series, the Indian team has been in decimating form and is high on confidence as it seeks to wrap up the three-match series with a win.

Tendulkar attributed team's heady performance to its all-round capability.

"It has been all-round performance that has seen us do consistently well. We just needed a break and that break I thought we got in Zimbabwe (2001) which came after a long time," he said.

"After that we went to the West Indies and won a Test there. We went to England and won. We went to South Africa, we won. We did that in Australia as well. So wherever we have travelled we have created an impact. That is what the nation was looking for and we are glad we have done it," Tendulkar added.

"We're having to go out there and learn situations as they unfold. It can be tough but we've also got the blueprint to follow when we're out there playing. It's staring us in the face every time they bat."

McCullum has also called for greater application and determination from his team-mates after the selectors opted not to make wholesale changes despite plenty of below-par performances in Hamilton.

"Making no changes gives us opportunities to try and rectify what we didn't do quite so well in the last game.

Sachin Tendulkar has been the most complete batsman of his time, and arguably the biggest cricket icon as well. His batting is based on the purest principles: perfect balance, economy of movement, precision in stroke-making, and that intangible quality given only to geniuses, anticipation. If he doesn't have a signature stroke - the upright, back-foot punch comes close - it is because he is equally proficient in each of the full range of orthodox shots (and plenty of improvised ones as well) and can pull them out at will.

Though he has adopted a noticeably conservative approach in the last quarter of his career, there are no apparent weaknesses in Tendulkar's game. He can score all around the wicket, off both front foot and back, and has made runs in all parts of the world in all conditions.

Virender Sehwag is a primal talent whose rough edges make him all the more appealing. By the time he had scored his first centuries in one-day cricket (off 70 balls, against New Zealand) and Test cricket (on debut, against South Africa, from 68 for 4), he was already eliciting comparisons with his idol Sachin Tendulkar. It is half true. Like Tendulkar, he is short and square with curly hair, plays the straight drive, backfoot punch and whip off the hips identically, but leaves Tendulkar in the shade when it comes to audacity.

Asked to open the innings in Tests on the tour of England in 2002, Sehwag proved an instant hit, cracking an 80 and a 100 in the first two matches. Regularly thereafter, he kept conjuring pivotal innings at the top of the order, none as significant as India's first 300 (which he bought up, characteristically, with a six), at Multan against Pakistan in early 2004.Sehwag bowls effective, loopy offspin, and is a reliable catcher in the slips. He also once almost split the cricket world: when he was banned for a match by the ICC referee Mike Denness on grounds of excessive appealing, the Indian board wasn't prepared to listen, and even played an unofficial Test with South Africa to prove a point. When a compromise was finally reached, Sehwag was back to his merry ways.

Black Caps wicket-keeper Brendon McCullum admits the home side cannot match India for experience but insists they are gaining plenty from the batting master-classes being given by the tourists.

Sachin Tendulkar's sublime 160 had put the visitors in a strong position on Friday as they finished their first innings with 520 runs for a 241 run lead.

A defiant ninth-wicket partnership between Brendon McCullum (84) and Iain O'Brien delayed the inevitable as their 76-run stand pushed the hosts to 279, but needing just just 39 for victory. Gautam Gambhir (30 not out) and Rahul Dravid (eight not out) then swiftly wrapped up the win in 5.2 overs.
It marked the first victory for India's in the country for 33 years and means they lead the three-match series 1-0.

But the day undoubtedly belonged to Tendulkar. His 260-ball innings included 26 boundaries and lasted over six hours and was largely responsible for the demanding total posted by the Indians.

Sachin Tendulkar stole the show for India as they took a firm grip on the first Test against New Zealand at Seddon Park in Hamilton on Friday.

The 35-year-old scored his 42nd test century on the way to an imposing 160 as India wracked up 520 runs in their first innings.

Things got even better for the tourists when their bowlers took three wickets to leave New Zealand 75 for three at stumps, trailing by 166 runs in their second innings. Daniel Flynn finished the session unbeaten on 24.

But the day undoubtedly belonged to Tendulkar. His 260-ball innings included 26 boundaries and lasted over six hours and was largely responsible for the demanding total posted by the Indians. By the time Tendulkar edged to Ross Taylor in the slips in the 14th over after lunch, the Little Master had gone from his lunch score of 135 to 160.

Speaking about the ongoing series, the Mumbaikar said, "It has been fantastic so far and we are looking forward to the rest of the tour. If we win the Test series, it would make the tour better." However the disappointment of the Indian Premier League being moved out of India still lingered.

England captain Andrew Strauss refused to become involved in the dispute, adding: "I don't know the fine print of that and it would be wrong for me to comment on that, really."England's final one-day matches in the Caribbean could be threatened by a cash dispute between WI players and their board.

Domestic players in the West Indies went on strike yesterday and refused to play in the three scheduled matches in the West Indies Cricket Board's regional four-day competition in protest at money that is allegedly owed to the players.

Yesterday's strike followed the resignation of Dinanath Ramnarine, who heads the players' association, as a director of the WICB while the West Indies players have also shown their solidarity.

Pietersen has accepted taking over the captaincy of the Bangalore Royal Challengers.

"I have spoken to Kevin. He has accepted the captaincy. So there is no question of Kevin not coming to play in the IPL. Otherwise, he would not have accepted the captaincy," Mallya said.

"We have a balanced team now and want to be a championship contender this time," he added.Dravid, who was sarcastically referred to as Test player in the slam-bang version of the game last year, will not play for the entire tournament as his wife is expecting their child.

The team will be led by Pietersen for the first phase of the second edition of IPL .

A further meeting is planned for Tuesday and, if the dispute is not resolved, the remaining three matches in the one-day series - in Barbados on March 27 and 29 and St Lucia on April 3 - could be under threat.

"I want to make clear that what happened with the tape is nothing to do with Digicel," explained West Indies captain Chris Gayle. "The players have no argument with Digicel but we wanted to send a statement.

"We support them (the players) in whatever stance they take. The union represent us so we have to stand by them."

Asked if the West Indies players could also take strike action, which could potentially disrupt the final three matches of the series, Gayle would only reply:

That solidarity was displayed earlier in the day with the West Indies team taking the field with tape on their left arm hiding the symbol of team sponsors' Digicel as a protest against the West Indies Cricket Board over payments they players claim they are owed for previous series.

Domestic players went on strike as part of the dispute today and further talks are planned before a proposed meeting between the two parties next Tuesday.

"I want to make clear that what happened with the tape is nothing to do with Digicel," said Gayle. "The players have no argument with Digicel, but we wanted to send a statement.

Tendulkar was unbeaten on 70 with Yuvraj Singh eight not out when bad light stopped play as India took command of the Test in response to the hosts' 279 on Wednesday.

Top Performer: Gautam Gambhir

The Black Caps did enjoy some early success when a superb direct hit by James Franklin resulted in the run out of Virender Sehwag in the third over of the day after India resumed on 29 without loss having survived seven overs last night.

Sehwag had faced just three deliveries when he was called for a risky second run after partner Gambhir had pushed a Kyle Mills delivery wide of gully, but he was well short of his ground and departed after adding just two to his overnight 22.

Laxman also had a let off after tea while on 15 when O'Brien failed to hold on to a difficult chance on the boundary.

But in the first over with the second new ball, the 34-year-old right-hander edged a Martin delivery to Ross Taylor in the slips to depart for 30 having taken India to 238.

It was the final wicket to fall in the day as Tendulkar went on to claim his 52nd Test half-century with a nice cover drive off Martin.

It was tough day for New Zealand's bowlers and in particular Mills, who finished with figures of none for 70 off 15 overs.

Dravid was also happy with his form. "I felt good today. My feet really moved well and I got into right positions through the day. I was scoring at fairly decent clip. But I got a pretty good one at that stage. Even after 60-65 overs, the ball was still seaming a little bit.

"Overall, I am quite satisfied. But it would have been nice to go on and get a big score. It would have helped the team had I probably been not out at the end of the day. That would have been great. But I felt good the way my balance and body was, and the way my feet were moving today," said Dravid, who notched his 54th half century in 132 Tests.

Talking about the wicket he had made 190 and 103 not out in 1998-99 here, Dravid said "It was a long time ago.

Rahul Dravid said big scores did not fascinate him but what satisfies him was contributing to the team's cause.

"It is not really the number of runs or centuries I score now. It is really about if I can make a contribution to a winning team in Test matches in India and abroad. That's what gives me satisfaction," said Dravid, who carved out a classy 66 at Seddon Park here.

Contributing to win satisfies Dravid

"I truly love the game. I have always played this game since I was a young kid. I have loved batting, I have loved being part of victories and making contributions to wins. I think that sort of thing gives me the challenge now.

"It is being part of someone else's success as a catcher. That has been a thrilling experience for me. To me to have taken so many catches is a reflection of the quality of attack that I've been lucky to have played with for India in all these 12-13 years.

"I have been lucky to have played with some very, very good bowlers that created the opportunities and given me, Sachin (Tendulkar) and (VVS) Laxman, in the slips, the opportunity to take 100-plus catches.

"You look at Javagal Srinath and Zaheer (Khan) and Venky (Venkatesh Prasad), so many of them, Anil (Kumble) and Harbhajan (Singh), the number of catches that I have taken off them.

England ace Kevin Pietersen believes that India have recently taken one-day international cricket to a new level.

Pietersen is adamant that playing in the Indian Premier League will help he and his England colleagues try to match the new level of skill shown by India in recent times.

He told BBC Sport: "I think the reason why India have gone through the roof is because of the Indian Premier League.

"After missing out last year, there is no way we can get up there if we don't play. India are taking one-day cricket to a different level.

Dimitri Mascarenhas was the star of the show as England beat a Players' Association XI by 51 runs.

He scored an unbeaten 84 from only 54 balls while captain for the day Ian Bell chipped in with 55 as England warmed up for the Twenty20 international against West Indies with a routine win in Pointe-a-Pierre.

Kevin Pietersen, Paul Collingwood and Andrew Strauss were all rested as England strolled to a big total of 299-8.

They then reduced their hosts to 100-7 before Samuel Badree and Kenroy Williams put together an impressive 114-run stand for the eighth wicket.

England Lions brought their tour of New Zealand to a discouraging close, slumping to an 84-run defeat in their Twenty20 match at Pukekura Park. The result means the tourists return home winless despite dominating the earlier four-day series for large parts.

Shanan Stewart was the match winner for New Zealand A, clubbing an unbeaten 88 from just 39 deliveries in his side's 227–6 in just 20 overs, while Gareth Hopkins chipped in with an 18-ball 41 at No7. The pair cleared the ropes nine times between them, with Stewart hitting seven sixes. Nobody escaped punishment for the bowling side, but Samit Patel came off worse than most, leaking 53 runs from his four overs.

Robert Key's Lions have proved no more attuned to the short form of the game .

England have failed to win an international game throughout the winter - a terrible indictment on a team of very highly paid, extremely cosseted cricketers.

They must start performing soon to build some confidence ahead of the Ashes because since the turn of the year Australia have reinvented themselves extremely well and could complete a series sweep of South Africa in the coming days. But national selector Miller has other worries, amongst them the decision of Middlesex and Kent to snap up Australians Phil Hughes and Stuart Clark respectively ahead of the Ashes.

There are two views on this: one is that cricket is one big happy family and everybody helps everybody else.

India continued to accumulate runs after the interval but their 105-run second wicket partnership came to an end when Gambhir (72) edged Chris Martin to Brendon McCullum to leave India 142 for two.

Dravid then reached his 54th Test fifty with his 10th four and he added 16 more before being bowled by Iain O'Brien, who squeezed a delivery between bat and pad to uproot the off stump and leave India 177 for three.

Tendulkar and VVS Laxman made it through to tea with the visitors at 197 for three but Tendulkar had a lucky escape on 13 shortly before the break when Daniel Flynn was unable to take a catch chasing back from midwicket after a mis-timed shot from the right-hander.Jesse Ryder, who hit a maiden Test century yesterday, bowled some tight spells with five maidens in his seven overs which cost just 10 runs.

If Viru and Gambhir can continue the same tomorrow and others can build on that we can really do well. We have the in-form VVS Laxman and Sachin Tendulkar.

I think Dravid can come good as well. It was a good decision by Dhoni to have fielded first Although he has been brought back after a long gap, I am sure his experience would have helped us. Well, I don't blame Dhoni's decision at all, a captain I think always knows better, but in my opinion Balaji or Irfan could have a made a big difference today on this particular wicket.

Well nothing special. Just play to your potential. Show patience, as conditions keep changing there. I think we have players who have tons of experience and they should come good this time. Most of them have played there before.

Vettori and Ryder fought back. They were brilliant today. But again I reckon we let them off the hook. You can't blame the captain or the bowlers. They bowled well right through. But Munaf struck late, he failed to captalise on the morning conditions. Otherwise it could have been a different story altogether. Our batting is pretty strong and we are now off to a good start. If Viru and Gambhir can continue the same tomorrow and others can build on that we can really do well. We have the in-form VVS Laxman and Sachin Tendulkar. I think Dravid can come good as well. It was a good decision by Dhoni to have fielded first after winning the toss, but again I felt sorry for the way we slipped in the middle.Certainly, he could have exploited the conditions better. He is in good form and New Zealanders could have found him more difficult, since he did not play in the one-dayers. Although he has been brought back after a long gap, I am sure his experience would have helped us.

We have two strike bowlers in Zaheer and Ishant. Their form is going to be the key in this series. Given the chance, our spinners Harbhajan Singh and Amit Mishra can pose problems. Well you may not compare them with a Prasanna or a Bedi,

who were very successful wherever they played. But I am happy with our attack, which is good enough to win matches abroad.: Conditions I reckon are the same.

We also had the same wind. Yes the wickets are certainly a bit flatter now. But there is always something for the bowlers as the weather keeps changing from time to time.Well, just memories remain. They keep haunting us. Yes it was a fantastic series win for us. Till now that win is history. I did well with the bat, but others also came good when we needed the most. Chandu Borde, Surti, Jai and Pat were superb in that series.

India reached the close at 27 without loss after openers Virender Sehwag (22) and Gautam Gambhir (six) negotiated a seven-over spell.

Ominously for the Black Caps, Sehwag hit five boundaries before stumps were pulled to back-up Vettori's thoughts the pitch was flattening out.

"Having batted on it for two sessions I've realised that the bite has been taken out of (the wicket)," Vettori said.

"For us to go well against these guys we are going to have to bowl really well, really disciplined and be patient with them. If we don't a big total could easily pile up on us."

Sehwag to play his natural game.

"We want him to play the way he wants to play, because that is his natural style. We all know if he gets going he can dominate the bowlers and all of a sudden you see the bowling attack rattled," the 27-year-old said.

With India chasing an elusive Test series victory in New Zealand, something they haven't achieved in 41 years, Dhoni knows the importance of an in-form Sehwag up the order.

The bowlers have come out with plenty of aggression on flat tracks. They bowled the right lines and have got the best batsmen out because of their consistency and execution of plans. Speaking about the three-match Test series, the India captain said he expects New Zealand to come back hard after losing the one-day series 3-1.

"New Zealand lost the one-day series, but that doesn't mean they are not a good side. They are a very competitive team, especially when it comes to exploiting the conditions out here. India opted to bowl first and seemers Ishant Sharma, Zaheer Khan and Munaf Patel set about orchestrating one of their country's best opening sessions in Test history.

They gave New Zealand's openers the first hour before the wickets began to fall, as Martin Guptill, Daniel Flynn and Tim McIntosh were picked off in quick succession by Zaheer Khan and Ishant Sharma.

Test debutant Guptill was the first to go when he edged Kahn to Rahul Dravid in the slips after reaching 14, leaving the total on 17 for one.

His replacement, Flynn, lasted just three balls before he too fell foul to Kahn, caught behind by MS Dhoni off a leg-side delivery for no runs.

Virender Sehwag will once again be crucial for India to dominate NZ in the Test series, skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni says.

Speaking to reporters on the eve of the first Test, Dhoni said he wants Sehwag to play his natural game.

India have not won a Test series in New Zealand in 41 years and Dhoni is aware that to set things right, his bowlers would have to put in a massive effort.

"We are looking for a 3-1 combination. Each and every individual is important. It is not only about the new ball. Most important thing is how the bowler is bowling from the 20th over onwards, when the glaze off the ball is gone and when there is not that much help. That is the time when a third seamer comes into play. That extra effort will be needed from all the three fast bowlers," he said. The Indian skipper also defended speedster Munaf Patel, who came in for a bit of stick in the one-day series. "He is a much better bowler than what he did in the one-dayers. He bowled as one-change seamer and the wickets were quite placid. Since New Zealand got off to good starts they targeted the third seamer. It is always tough to judge on the basis of the performance in one-day cricket."

Dhoni had said at the pre-first Test match media briefing.

NZC and their Asian broadcast partner Sony discussed the scheduling arrangements, including the possibility of adjusting the start time to grab more eyeballs at a later time zone in India.

After discussions with Sony, and with the teams and match officials, it has now been confirmed that the start time will remain at 11.00 am.The start times for the second and third Tests at Napier (March 26-30) and Wellington (April 3-7) are expected to be confirmed in the next few days.
They are a very competitive team, especially when it comes to exploiting the conditions out here. We expect tough cricket over the next 20-25 days," Dhoni said.

"We don't rely on individuals. If you see our record in the past one and a half year, we don't really depend only on batsmen. The bowlers have come out with plenty of aggression on flat tracks. They bowled the right lines and have got the best batsmen out because of their consistency and execution of plans. We don't rely on just batsmen or bowlers, we have been good totally as a team." Speaking about the three-match Test series, the India captain said he expects New Zealand to come back hard after losing the one-day series 3-1.

Mumbai, March 17: After hitting the seventh fastest century in one-day cricket, Virender Sehwag goes into India`s Test series against New Zealand carrying a reputation as the world`s most destructive batsman.

"He`s now very much in a class of his own and is easily the most destructive player in the game today," New Zealand batting great Martin Crowe wrote in a newspaper.

"Given his innings in Test cricket, triple hundreds, exploits in Twenty20s and, obviously, one-dayers, he continues to defy really what batsmen have been trying to do for ages," the former New Zealand captain wrote.

Sehwag`s century in the fourth one-day international in Hamilton last Wednesday was the fastest by an Indian.
He finished with 125 not out in a 201-run opening stand in 23.3 overs in a rain-hit ODI to help India secure their first series victory on New Zealand soil.

Sehwag notched up a 27-ball 40 with three sixes and as many fours in the final match on Saturday which New Zealand won by eight wickets to register their only victory in the five-match series.

After demolishing the New Zealand bowling attack with consummate ease in one-dayers, explosive opener Virender Sehwag will once again be crucial for India to dominate New Zealand in the Test series starting on Wednesday, skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni said.

Speaking to reporters on the eve of the first Test, Dhoni said he wants Sehwag to play his natural game.

"We want him to play the way he wants to play, because that is his natural style. We all know if he gets going he can dominate the bowlers and all of a sudden you see the bowling attack rattled," the 27-year-old said.

"We have seen if he plays for two hours or three hours, he is a batsman who is capable of getting big scores. He is not the kind who gets out in 30s or 40s; 50s or 60s. If he gets going, he gets big scores."

With India chasing an elusive Test series victory in New Zealand, something they haven't achieved in 41 years, Dhoni knows the importance of an in-form Sehwag up the order.

The right-handed batsman can change the course of the game in one session by pulverising any bowling attack into submission.

India regroup after outplaying New Zealand in the One-day series with an even more ominous line-up for the first Test starting on Wednesday.

With Sachin Tendulkar appearing to be over a stomach strain that restricted his limited-over appearances, and the injection of fellow legends Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman, this is an Indian side stacked with run-makers.

Having won the One-dayers 3-1, with Virender Sehwag slaughtering the New Zealand attack, India start as firm favourites to win their first Test series in New Zealand in 40 years.

"We're up against it," was New Zealand captain Daniel Vettori's frank assessment on the eve of the first of three Tests.

Although the green tinge on the Seddon Park wicket will give the bowlers hope on the opening session the pitch should favour the batsmen for the remainder of the five

The celebrated trio apart, India could also bank on Gautam Gambhir, who has arguably been India's best batting find in recent times, Yuvraj Singh and skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni to put the runs on the board. Harbhajan Singh, Zaheer Khan and Balaji too can be handy with the willow.Given the wealth of experience and talent, self-belief and an enviable track record over the last 18 months, India begin the three-Test rubber as the favorites.

Guptill had good form in ODIs but his performance in the longer version has been far from satisfactory.

The match starts on Wednesday, casting the die for a veritable war of attrition between bat and ball.

Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, VVS Laxman and Virender Sehwag have the skill and experience to quell the Kiwi attack, though they had had a deplorable tour in 2002-03, when India had mustered a series-high score of 219. Any extravagance could hurt the Kiwis as well, as they have an inexperienced batting line-up, which has yet-to-be-christened Martin Guptill.Interestingly, Ross Taylor (14), Jesse Ryder (6), Daniel Flynn (9), Tim McIntosh (2) and Brendon McCullum (41) have played barely 72 Tests between them, half the number of matches that Tendulkar (156) has played in.Keeping this in mind, Kiwi coach Andy Moles said, "We don't want to play on a green seamer. We want to have a good game of cricket and I am sure that is what we will get.""In Asian wickets, you have got to hit the deck hard because the ball doesn't come on to the bat. The length is a little bit shorter in India. But here, the ball does a little bit if you bowl up

The conditions would demand great discipline from the Indian batsmen to collar a seam attack, spearheaded by Franklyn James, an ace at swinging the ball.

Kyle Mills, who on his day can trouble established batsmen, Iain O'Brien and either Chris Martin or new-find Brent Arnel could form the seam quartet. The young Kiwis would have to contend with the likes of Zaheer Khan and Ishant Sharma, who had rocked Australia and England even on docile wickets back home. If the duo, assisted by Lakshmipathy Balaji, could seam and cut the Kookaburra ball, the hosts could be vulnerable under pressure, as they were in the ODIs.

Paul Collingwood has been ruled out of the T20 clash against West Indies on Sunday after he caught a bacterial infection.

The all-rounder was unable to train with the rest of the squad on Friday, BBC News online reports.

West Indies will start without skipper Chris Gayle, as he suffers from a groin injury.

Wicketkeeper Denesh Ramdin will stand in as skipper, while all-rounder Dwayne Bravo is available after being out for six months with an ankle problem. Bravo underwent surgery in New York last August but is named in the 13-man squad and is expected to play.

Andrew Strauss is determined to prove he has the skills to prosper in limited overs cricket when he leads England into tomorrow's Twenty20 International and the subsequent one-day series.

The Middlesex left-hander was discarded by England as a one-day international player following the disastrous World Cup campaign in the Caribbean two years ago after a run of only one half-century in 14 innings.

He has also not featured in a Twenty20 international since 2006 but after being handed the captaincy in all forms of the game in the aftermath of Kevin Pietersen and coach Peter Moores losing their jobs, Strauss is determined to prove a point at the Queen's Park Oval tomorrow.

Strauss, who is effectively on trial as England's one-day captain after the selectors only appointed him for this series, admitted: "I am energised by it.

"I've been out for a couple of years and while I've been out I've played some pretty decent cricket for Middlesex.

"I don't feel like I'm incapable of playing at this level of one-day cricket and you have motivation to prove yourself again.

"It's like when I came back into the Test side, you've got that extra motivation to prove yourself again and that allows you to get up in the morning with a spring in your step."

India are set to make some changes in their playing eleven and in all probability left-arm spinner Pragyan Ojha and Irfan Pathan are likely to get a game before they return home alongwith Yusuf Pathan, Praveen Kumar and Rohit Sharma on Sunday.

While Irfan played in the Twenty20 series, which India lost 0-2, Ojha so far has had little to do on this tour, other than roll his arm over at the nets.

And this will come as an ideal opportunity for Ojha to win the selectors' confidence. A poor show in the match would provide the leeway for Ravindra Jadeja, who has the making of a competitive all-rounder, to stake a claim for the second spinner's slot in India's ODI scheme of things.

Yuvraj Singh perished to a Ryder delivery in an attempt to up the ante after a long period of lull in the middle.

Oram picked up his second wicket when Virender Sehwag miscued one and was held comfortably by Brendon McCullum.

An outstanding catch by Scott Styris ended Suresh Raina's stay at the crease when he tried to blast Oram out of the park.

However, New Zealand's bowlers are once again running for cover as Virender Sehwag take them on a trip around Eden Park in Auckland.

It will be interesting to see how many balls disappear in tomorrow's day-night affair at the small but petite Eden Park ground, whose square boundaries are a lot shorter than Christchurch, where a record number of sixes were blasted in the Twenty20 (24) and one-day (31) match of the series.

There is also a possibility of Sehwag, who has been in the form of his life, to score a double hundred, something that he spoke about after his 60-ball hundred in the last match.
