Desperate Punjab up against Delhi

Having already secured a place in the semi-finals, Delhi would be keen to continue the good work when they take on Punjab today.

If Delhi are on a high after becoming the first team to qualify for the last four stage with 16 points from 10 matches, Punjab have been laid low by some rather inconsistent performance that see them second from the bottom of the points table in the eight-team event.

They Yuvraj Singh-led side desperately need a victory against the marauding Daredevils if they hope to make it to the semi-finals but doing so will be one huge task given the rich vein of form the Delhi is going through right now.

Kings XI Punjab need to pull out something special of the hat and one man who can do that is skipper Yuvraj himself. He had a rather sedate tournament so far and is long overdue a big score.

The others too need to chip in and if their last encounter against Mumbai Indians is anything to go by, then a lot need to be done in their batting department.

Formidable

To add to that Mahela's Jayawardene's hamstring injury still remains a matter of concern for the Punjab thinktank. The Sri Lankan didn't feature in the last match after sustaining the injury against Deccan Chargers on May 9.

The bowling has improved with Brett Lee's arrival but lacks the bite despite the presence of left-arm pacers Yusuf Abdulla and Irfan Pathan. S Sreesanth has been a big disappointment for the Kings XI with the maverick right-arm pacer scalping just one wicket from his three outings conceding huge runs.

The Kings XI bowling will be tested to the limit against a formidable Daredevils batting line-up that boasts the likes of Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir, David Warner, AB de Villiers, Tillakaratne Dilshan and Dinesh Karthik. All of them are in fine form and the best part of Delhi's batting is that even if one fails, the rest are there to shoulder the burden.

The bowling department too is quite balanced with youngsters Pradeep Sangwan and Rajat Bhatia giving Ashish Nehra and Dirk Nannes good company. In Amit Mishra, Delhi have a quality spinner who can put the opposition in all sorts of trouble.

Still, bowling could be a cause of concern for Sehwag especially after the manner in which Adam Gilchrist and Andrew Symonds hammered their way in the last match.

It needed a Bhatia special to turn things around for Delhi but Sehwag must be aware that such things don't happen everyday.

Kings XI Punjab would also hope that for once the Delhi batting fails to fire for it will be their only hope for survival in this year's IPL.

Approaching milestones

- Yuvraj Singh (296) needs four runs to become the first
batsman to aggregate 300 runs in the second edition of
the IPL.

- Tillakaratne Dilshan (286) requires 14 runs to become
the second batsman from Delhi Daredevils to aggregate
300 runs in the second edition of the IPL. Abraham
de Villiers (315) was the first to achieve the feat.

- Ashish Nehra (15) needs two wickets to overtake
Rudra Pratap Singh's tally of 16 in the second edition
of the IPL and to become the leading wicket-taker.

Royals go to battle without Warne

Rajasthan Royals will be a lesser force when they take on in-form Mumbai Indians in a crucial IPL match today.

The Royals would be without their inspirational skipper Shane Warne ruled out owing to a hamstring injury.

Warne's hamstring injury means his much-anticipated face-off with Mumbai skipper Sachin Tendulkar, which was prevented by rain the last time around, will not happen yet again.

Both the teams are tied on 11 points after 11 games but Mumbai is ahead on net run rate at the fourth spot and tomorrow's match might prove be crucial in deciding the semifinal spots.

Latest Standings

Rajasthan's current form is not too encouraging and after the team lost to Chennai Super Kings and Deccan Chargers in its last two matches, Warne's imposing presence would surely be missed by the defending champions.

Mumbai, on the other hand, seems to have recovered from a hat-trick of losses and have registered two back-to-back wins over Royal Challengers Bangalore and Kings XI Punjab to put their campaign back on track.

The team's batting looks solid with Tendulkar in sublime form and JP Duminy emerging as the middle order mainstay. Among others, Dwayne Bravo has also been among the runs while Ajinkya Rahane is in sparkling form.

Sanath Jayasuriya's form, however, remains a concern and Tendulkar would expect the Sri Lankan to wriggle out of the bad patch tomorrow and play his natural, swashbuckling cricket. Mumbai bowlers are not doing too badly and injured pace spearhead Zaheer Khan's absence has not been felt much.

Lasith Malinga and Harbhajan Singh have combined to lead the attack well, although the fiery off-spinner has complained that he is not aware of his role in the team.

Royals depending on Smith to deliver

In comparison, Rajasthan's batting is too reliant on Graeme Smith and Yusuf Pathan although Naman Ojha, who was initially sent back, has turned out to be quite a surprise package.

However, the unavailability of pacers Kamran Khan and Amit Singh, both of whom were found guilty of having a suspect action, has taken the bite out of Rajasthan's bowling attack.

And with the talismanic Warne, known to surprise the opposition with unconventional and often successful bowling changes, missing from action, it would be interesting to see how Rajasthan reacts to tight situations in the match.

Approaching milestones

- Shane Warne (30) needs two wickets to overtake Rudra Pratap Singh's tally of 31 wickets in the IPL and to regain the top spot in terms of wicket-aggregate.

- Sachin Tendulkar (455) needs 45 runs to complete his 500 runs in the IPL.

- Sanath Jayasuriya (689) requires 11 runs to complete his 700 runs in the IPL. The top three batsmen in terms of run-aggregate in the IPL are: Adam Gilchrist (765), Suresh Raina (730) and Gautam Gambhir (730).

- Jean-Paul Duminy (297) needs three runs to become the fifth batsman to aggregate 300 runs or more in the second edition of the IPL. The top run-getters are Matthew Hayden (426), Adam Gilchrist (329), Abraham de Villiers (315) and Suresh Raina (309).

Watch Delhi Daredevils vs Deccan Chargers ipl match live streaming

Durban: Deccan Chargers Hyderabad will be looking to brighten their chances of making the semi-finals in the Indian Premier League (IPL) when they face table toppers Delhi Daredevils on Wednesday.

Daredevils are almost through to the last four with 14 points from nine matches and a win against Deccan Chargers at the Kingsmead will only make them feel comfortable at the top.

Daredevils are on a three-match winning streak and will like to carry the momentum against Deccan Chargers, who defeated defending champions Rajasthan Royals in their last match.

For Daredevils, skipper Virender Sehwag will be back but his return will create some selection problems regarding David Warner's place in the team. Warner has been in good form in the tournament and the Australian will have to sit out.

With Ashish Nehra, Pradeep Sangwan and Dirk Nannes bowling well, legendary Australian fast bowler Glenn McGrath is likely to warm the bench again.

Deccan Chargers are high on confidence after defeating Rajasthan Royals. A win against Daredevils will give them 14 points from 11 matches and that will obviously brighten their chances of making it to the semi-finals.

Deccan Chargers batting has been bolstered with the return of Andrew Symonds. Rohit Sharma has been performing well both with the bat and ball. But it will need an all-round performance by the Deccan Chargers to beat the formidable Delhi Daredevils.

The battle gets more intense

Fireworks are on cards when Mumbai Indians face Kings XI Punjab on Today in a crucial IPL fixture in Centurion.

Though Mumbai's losing streal might have finally ended but the road to semifinals remains tough as they take on an equally desperate Punjab in Centurion.

Just one point separates the two teams on the championship table with Punjab ahead at the fifth spot after 10 matches. In fact, Punjab had got the better of Mumbai when the two teams faced off the first time around in the event.

Mumbai are also through with 10 matches, having notched up four wins against five losses and a washout. Sachin Tendulkar's men endured a three-match losing streak before finally managing a win against Royal Challengers Bangalore Monday night.

Brett Lee boost

Punjab have been strengthened by the arrival of Australian pacer Brett Lee, who impressed with both bat and ball in the nail-biting win over Deccan Chargers in his first IPL match this season.

Among the batsmen, Mahela Jayawardene scored a fifty against Deccan and will have to play a key role in the middle order.

Kumar Sangakkara and skipper Yuvraj Singh have been in good touch and it would be quite a task for the Mumbai bowlers to contain them if they get going

Mumbai's spirit has been lifted by last night's win over Royal Challengers Bangalore. South African J P Duminy's consistent scoring has taken care of the inconsistency of the opening pair of Sanath Jayasuriya and Tendulkar. But for Mumbai to do well, Tendulkar and Jayasuriya have to click at the top as Duminy may not be able to bail the side out in every match.

Bowling weak without Zaheer

The bowling has been hit badly by Zaheer Khan's absence. The pacer has been unavailable for the past three matches due to a shoulder injury and his absence has taken the bite out of Mumbai's attack.

Star off-spinner Harbhajan Singh's inconsistent form hasn't helped the team's cause either.

Both the teams have lost some close encounters and it would be interesting to see how the two captains -- Tendulkar and Yuvraj -- respond if the match turns out to be a humdinger.

With the race to semifinals heating up, the contest is of immense significance as both Mumbai and Punjab are locked in an intense battle to be among the top-four.

Approaching milestones

- Mumbai Indians would certainly like to improve their record against Kings XI Punjab. They have lost all their previous three matches against Kings XI Punjab - by 66 runs at Mohali; by 1 run at Mumbai and by 3 runs at Durban.
- Sanath Jayasuriya (685) needs 15 runs to complete his 700 runs in the IPL and to join Suresh Raina (730), Gautam Gambhir (711) and Adam Gilchrist (701).
- Jean-Paul Duminy (297) requires 3 runs to become the third batsman to complete 300 runs or more in the second edition of the IPL. Matthew Hayden (426) and Suresh Raina (309) are the only two batsmen to have made 300 runs in the second edition.

RCB looks to bounce back

Royal Challengers Bangalore gets an opportunity to bounce back when it takes on tournament laggard Kolkata Knight Riders today.

Just a week back, Bangalore was on a high, fourth in the Indian Premier League table on the back of three successive victories.

But seven days can prove to be pretty long in this slam bang format of the game which the Royal Challengers found out much to their dismay.

Two defeats -- against Mumbai Indians and Rajasthan Royals -- and the Anil Kumble-led side has slipped to seventh in the table and would be desperate to make amends when it takes on the battered Kolkata.

With eight defeats to its credit, the Brendon McCullum-led Kolkata has no worries of slipping up further, and that is the only plus for the side which has been ripped apart by all the teams.

Launchpad

Its armour rusty and motivation having reached nadir, this team offers Royal Challengers a perfect launchpad in its bid to reclaim a spot in the top half of the table.

But consistency seems to be the worrying factor for Bangalore and much depends on the batting prowess of Jacques Kallis, Mark Boucher, Rahul Dravid and Robin Uthappa to set things right.

The experienced Kumble leads the bowlers and is still capable of putting the spanner on the opposition provided he gets some support from the other end. Praveen Kumar and Dillon du Preez have had decent outings and against a faltering Kolkata, they ought to fancy their chances.

But the Royal Challengers would be doing themselves harm if they choose to be complacent against an outfit, which despite an abundance of talent, hasn't performed as a team.

Good pace

Still, there's a thin line between hope and despair and one good outing could change all that.

They certainly have the wherewithal in McCullum -- runs are long overdue from his bat -- Sourav Ganguly, Brad Hodge and the big-hitting David Hussey, who is back after Australia duty.

The bowling looks a bit suspect and though Ishant Sharma and Ajit Agarkar are generating good pace, wickets seem to be hard to come by.

Kolkata would also be hoping for some luck, which it seems it have left behind while heading for the rainbow nation, as it attempts to avoid the dubious record of registering the most number of defeats in the tournament, one that is held by Deccan Chargers (12).

Watch United rule out further appeal live streaming

Manchester United have ruled out any further attempt to overturn Darren Fletcher's Champions League final ban.

UEFA had earlier rejected United's protest against the Scotland midfielder's red card in the semi-final against Arsenal and although the club have the right of a further appeal it was made clear they stood little chance of success.

Barcelona's protests over defenders Eric Abidal and Dani Alves were also rejected by UEFA's control and disciplinary committee today, and those players too will miss the final in Rome on May 27.

A United spokesman said: "Darren is an honest player and we felt we should do what we could to try and help him become eligible for the Champions League final by initially protesting his dismissal.

"However, we respect the referee's decision and we will therefore not be appealing against today's ruling."

UEFA said both United and Barcelona had missed the deadline for filing A protest but that there were no grounds for overturning suspensions in any case.

The ban will come as a huge blow for Fletcher, a non-playing substitute at last season's final, who was sent off by Italian referee Roberto Rosetti for denying Arsenal's Cesc Fabregas a goal-scoring chance - television replays showed however he seemed to have won the ball.

Abidal's red card against Chelsea was also viewed as harsh though Alves' caution that will see him miss the final looked straightforward.

A UEFA statement said: "Even if they had been admitted they would have been rejected as unfounded as there were no grounds for contesting the referees' original decisions."

Shane Warne's tactics give Rajasthan Royals an edge over Adam Gilchrist's Deccan Chargers when the two face off on Monday.

Both the sides are smarting from defeats in previous matches.

Warne and Gilchrist, two men who never got along while playing together for Australia, lock horns as rival skippers at Kimberley's De Beers Diamond Oval for the second time in IPL as the race for the semifinals heats up.

Warne had the last laugh in the previous encounter and Gilchrist would be eager to get even with the man with whom he shared one of the most successful partnerships as a wicketkeeper for Australia but could never get along beyond that.

In fact, the Warne-Gilchrist rivalry adds a different dimension to the contest between two sides, evenly matched as far as batting is concerned.

Deccan batting looking good

For Deccan, Andrew Symonds has made a late entry to the team and has made a brilliant start, scoring a 36-ball 60 in the match against Kings XI Punjab.

Gilchrist, himself, has been in a good touch and Herschelle Gibbs hasn't done too bad either. Add to this, Rohit Sharma's consistency and Deccan's line-up looks formidable.

But Rajasthan's batting is no less with openers Naman Ojha and Graeme Smith in fine form. In Yusuf Pathan, Rajasthan has the aggressor who can change the course of a match. Warne, himself, is no novice with the bat.

Bowling could be the difference

It is the bowling, perhaps, which gives Rajasthan the slight edge.

Pacer Amit Singh -- reported for suspect action but allowed to play until the IPL technical committee decides on his fate -- has wrecked havoc whenever he has been given the ball.

Left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja is also among the wickets and adding to the team's bowling strength is the captain-cum-coach Warne himself.

In contrast, pace spearhead R P Singh has not been too consistent for Deccan.

The part-time spin of Rohit and Symonds cannot be relied upon to win matches, especially the close games, as was proved in the last-over loss to Kings XI Punjab, even though Gilchrist insists that bowling is not a concern.

That Gilchrist is an inspiring leader cannot be doubted considering the way he has turned Deccan into a competitive team after last season's flop show but Warne's ability to surprise the opposition will give him the edge in MOnday's match.

Approaching milestones
- For both the teams, the forthcoming encounter would be a vital one. Both teams have won five games each so far in the second edition of the IPL.
- Deccan Chargers, in case of a win, would be registering their first victory over Rajasthan. Rajasthan have won all the previous three encounters against Deccan Chargers - by 3 wickets at Hyderabad; by 8 wickets at Jaipur and by 3 wickets at Port Elizabeth.
- Adam Gilchrist (691) requires only 9 runs to complete his 700 runs in the IPL.

Newcastle vs Middlesbrough

Middlesbrough boss Gareth Southgate will be at odds with former England team-mate Alan Shearer when the pair meet in a do-or-die battle at St James` Park on Monday night.

Shearer, who took on the task of dragging Newcastle out of the Barclays Premier League relegation zone last month, admitted on Thursday the latest Tyne-Tees derby is the biggest game of even his illustrious career.

But while victory for the Magpies would take them out of the bottom three after Hull's home defeat by Stoke, Southgate insists the crucial contest is only the most important because it is the next one.

Full-back Andrew Taylor returns to Boro`s squad after recovering from a hip flexor problem.

However, skipper Emanuel Pogatetz will miss the rest of the season with the knee injury which has sidelined him for the last four games, and Chris Riggott (ankle) is also still out.

Southgate said: "It's pointless going back to games you have played in the past.

"You would have to question whether this is bigger than the game where we had waited 128 years to win a trophy - you have to question whether it is bigger than a European final.

"But, because it's the next game and the task ahead of us is to stay in the league, yes it is - but last week's was and next week's will be.

"There's a sense of perspective in that. We love to hype matches - this obviously has tremendous importance for both teams, and other teams at the bottom of the table, but there are still two more games to play after it.

"If we win, we still need other results to get ourselves over the line."

Southgate and Shearer won 120 England caps between them, many of them together, and were part of the team which came agonisingly close to reaching the final of Euro '96, with the defender missing the crucial penalty in the semi-final shoot-out with Germany.

Southgate then captained Boro to Carling Cup glory in 2004, and led them out out for the UEFA Cup final in Eindhoven two seasons later.

However, while the prize at stake in the remaining three games of the campaign might be more modest - at least in non-financial terms - he has ordered his players to relish the challenge.

He said: "It's very difficult to put into that context, really, because they are chances to win something and be part of history that will be forever remembered by your supporters.

"This is a different sort of challenge. But the one thing I would say is you should relish that challenge."

Newcastle defender Habib Beye has urged his Newcastle team-mates to adopt Shearer's winning mentality to hand the manager a first victory just when he needs it most.

Joey Barton begins his three-match suspension after being sent off at Liverpool on Sunday, while Alan Smith is a major doubt with a thigh problem.

Left-back Jose Enrique is struggling to shake off his hamstring injury, but central defender Steven Taylor (ankle) has returned to training after two games on the sidelines and could figure.

The Magpies face their derby rivals knowing a first three-point haul since February 7 would lift them above Hull on goal difference and out of the relegation zone with just two games to play.

They are equally well aware that the alternative is simply not an option, and Beye knows the time has come to deliver a maiden victory in six attempts for Shearer.

Beye said: "He is still strong, when he is playing with us in training, he is still really strong, and he is a winner.

"You can see when he plays all the small games sometimes with us, he wants to win every game, and that's the mentality we must have.

"He has done a great job for us with [assistant] Iain Dowie. I believe we will stay in the Premier League and I hope for the club he will stay next year and bring something good for the next year."

Shearer's continued presence on Tyneside - he has insisted all along that his return to St James' would last just eight games, although there is a growing feeling he is ready to commit himself for a longer period - will depend on a series of factors, although relegation or otherwise may not be one of them.

But in the short term, the only focus is on avoiding a drop which would have been unthinkable just a few years ago as the home-grown talisman led the fight for honours on the pitch.

And a derby win would at least give the club the springboard they so desperately need.

Shearer said: "It would be massive, without a doubt. It would give everyone a huge lift confidence-wise, belief-wise."

Delhi's winning streak hardly looks to face much challenge from Kolkata when the two square off in an IPL match on Sunday.
Delhi Daredevils, riding high on a hat-trick of wins, and Kolkata Knight Riders, who are virtually out from the race of semis, faced each other for the first time in the competition on Tuesday and Brendon McCullum's men, without a win for the past seven matches, were completely outplayed by the Delhi side.
Nannes effect

A rookie pacer in Dirk Nannes has done the job for it with the ball and Delhi has been more than happy to give him a spot in the playing XI ahead of McGrath.

Collingwood, meanwhile, never seemed required in a line-up that already boasts of Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir, David Warner and Tillakaratne Dilshan
Nothing going the right way

Kolkata, on the other hand, are in desperate search for that one match winner who can turn things around for the beleaguered side, which lies at the bottom of the table. The pressure of captaincy seems to have silenced McCullum's bat significantly and Sourav Ganguly too has not come up with anything extraordinary so far.

The explosive Chris Gayle is gone and the only positive development for the side in a while is the availability of Australian David Hussey, who is expected to be inducted immediately into the struggling line-up.

Poor batting has meant that the bowlers have had very little role to play in deciding the Kolkata's fortune even though the likes of Ishant Sharma have not done too bad.

Delhi in good shape

On current form, Delhi, semifinalists last year, are certain to make the cut even this time around. In contrast, Kolkata are fighting a grim battle to avoid being at the bottom of the heap.

The contrasting form makes Delhi an overwhelming favourites and it would be nothing short of a stunner if Kolkata manage to pull off that elusive win.

Approaching milestones:

Gautam Gambhir (693) needs 38 runs more to become the leading run-getter in the IPL and to overtake Suresh Raina's tally of 730.
- Ashish Nehra (24) needs one wicket to complete 25 wickets in the IPL. He is the leading wicket-taker for Delhi Daredevils in the IPL.
- Tillakaratne Dilshan requires 52 runs more to become the third batsman after Matthew Hayden (426) and Suresh Raina (309) to complete 300 runs in the 2009 edition of the IPL.

Sachin Tendulkar (14th), VVS Laxman (16th) and Virender Sehwag (20th) are the other Indian batsmen inside the top-20.

Meanwhile, England, currently placed sixth on the table, will immediately move up one spot if it wins both the matches of its upcoming two-Test series against West Indies.

Victories at Lord's and again at Durham would earn England three ratings points giving it a total of 101, a single point ahead of Pakistan. A 1-0 series win would leave it on 100 ratings point but behind Younus Khan's team by a fraction.

However, a 2-0 win for the West Indies would leave just one ratings point separating the two with England dropping three points to 95 and the men from the Caribbean gaining five points to 94.Mumbai Indians went down to Bangalore Royal Challengers by nine wickets.

The Indians recovered from a shaky start thanks to half-centuries from Sanath Jayasuriya and Dwayne Bravo that saw them post 149 for four in their 20 overs.

In response, Jacques Kallis (69) and Robin Uthappa (66) helped Royal Challengers cruise to a nine-wicket victory with 11 balls to spare.

"Results of at least two matches could have gone in our favour but the Australians showed more professionalism and discipline and we need to improve in these areas ourselves," Younis said in an interview.

"But I don't have a magic wand to make things happen quickly. Improvement in performance and consistency in the team will only come with time. And every player has to show and take responsibility for the team it is not just the captain who can do everything," he said.

Younis said he needed more support from other team members to concentrate on his captaincy and own batting.

"I need more support from my support team because I spent a lot of time with the players in this series. I know that I have to get runs to set the right example. I want to concentrate on my batting and captaincy," Younis said. The captain said he was satisfied with the performance of controversial fast bowler, Shoaib Akhtar who ended with just three wickets in four matches.

Kings XI didn't have the best of starts in the tournament as they began with back-to-back defeats against Delhi Daredevils and Kolkata Knight Riders in two rain-marred ties.

To their credit, the Mohali outfit showed tremendous resilience and engineered three wins on the trot to put their campaign back on track.

The momentum snapped when the lowly Royal Challengers Bangalore upset their apple cart but once again Yuvraj and his men bounced back by beating the Kolkata Knight Riders two days ago, also settling scores with the side which had beaten them in their first encounter.

In contrast, the defending champions under Warne had a rather rollercoaster ride with agony and ecstasy following each other with amazing regularity.

The opening match debacle against the Royal Challengers Bangalore was followed by the washed out tie against Mumbai Indians. Beating the Knight Riders gave them their first taste of triumph and they went on to get the better of the mighty Delhi Daredevils and redoubtable Deccan Chargers, losing to Kings XI Punjab and Chennai Super Kings in between.

"I think I was a little tense during the initial matches but I have settled down. Now, I have some confidence going. I played my natural game yesterday. And I am very happy that we won the match," he was quoted as saying in the IPL website.

With Rajasthan placed at number three, Smith said his new found confidence will help his team to make it to the final four.

"No, I did not want to set a score for myself. I just wanted to be positive today. I just wanted to be myself on the field. Hopefully, I can use the confidence in the coming matches to help my side secure a semi-final berth," he said.

The left-handed South African also lavished praise on his opening partner Naman Ojha.

"Naman Ojha was awesome. He allowed me to play some positive cricket. It was great to have a good opening partnership in the match. Our top-order has struggled, so it feels good to make the amends," he said.

Bopara, dropped after his hundred in Barbados in March due to a change of team composition, took advantage of being dropped on 76 after lamely turning to Brendan Nash at square-leg off Fidel Edwards.

"It is not my fault I get dropped," Bopara said. "I just have to take advantage of it.

"I was about to turn around and walk off. It caught me by surprise that he dropped it."

Bopara reached three figures 13 overs from the close and acknowledged his landmark with a sign to write his name on the famous honour's board at the ground.

"I am really proud," he said. "When you come to Lord's to play county matches, you wonder if your name will ever be up there.

"I have always wanted to test myself as to where I am in my game and that's the best test I have had so far."

Some would argue that a spell in the Indian Premier League is not the best preparation for Test cricket but Bopara used it positively.

"There was the fiasco over Kevin Pietersen, the fiasco over Allen Stanford and his millions, they've tried three or four guys as captain," said Boycott.

"Now they've got Andrew Strauss who is quite a nice lad - he will do a decent job - but I'm not convinced he is a natural captain.

"It's a gift, to look after 10 other people and also to still look after your own game and play well, and at the same time be thinking two steps ahead of the game.

"When you're captain you can't just wait for things to happen. The great captains are thinking ahead."

Reflecting on the vexed number three slot, Boycott added: "If you look at the number three position, we have tried Ian Bell and Owais Shah, they're still talking about bringing Michael Vaughan back, and now are are trying Ravi Bopara. That is just one position.
