Indians at Wimbledon: PartII

In 1990, Paes joined the Krishnans as the third Indian to win the jounior Wimbledon title in 1990. Ranked 11 at the time, the Kolkata boy beat South African Marcus Ondruska, seeded two (7-5, 2-6, 6-4).

In 1999, Paes, along with his doubles partner Bhupathi, had their most glorious moment on the Wimbledon greens when they won the men's doubles title. Beat Dutchman Paul Haarhuis and American Jared Palmer (6-7, 6-3, 6-4, 7-6).

Paes and Bhupathi, dubbed the "Indian Express" became the first Indians to win the title. With the French Open doubles crown won two months earlier, the duo went on to become the No 1 doubles pair in the world.

Indians at Wimbledon: Part I

Sania Mirza entered the Wimbledon juniors in 2001, reached the second round, but failed to get past. The Hyderabad girl was then aged 14 and seven months and became the youngest entrant to be accepted by the Wimbledon 2001 committee into the main draw of the Grand Slam event.

The last Indian entry into the Wimbledon circuit was Yuki Bhambri, in 2008. Though he could not make it big, there was promise that not many failed to notice.

India is abuzz with young talent though not many have gone on to make a mark in the international circuit as yet, Sania, Somdev and Prakash Amritraj have given the country lots to cheer about.

The Paes-Bhupathi era was perhaps the turning point for India and their recent domination at the greens would do a lot to pep up the morale of the Indian contingent at Wimbledon, battling for glory for the nation.

watch Gentlemen's Singles - 2nd Round Andy Murray(GBR)[3] vs. Ernests Gulbis(LAT) live streaming

Andy Murray supplied the Centre Court crowd with a shower of reality on a burning late afternoon at Wimbledon.

In the end the British number one progressed solidly enough to the second round with a 7-5 6-7 6-3 6-4 victory against American journeyman Robert Kendrick.

But it was a performance sprinkled with uncertainty and tension. One to douse expectation, rather than fuel the history-making hype which has accompanied his preparations for Wimbledon so far. And perhaps that is no bad thing.

Indeed, as the odd Union Jacks fluttered and the painted saltires glistened on perspiring foreheads the fluctuating moods of elation and apprehension were reminiscent of Tim Henman at his frustrating best. Or should that be worst.

John McEnroe called it a "B performance" from Murray, compared to the "A performance" served up by Roger Federer on the opening day.

And McEnroe's verdict hit the spot, although Murray hardly gave the impression of a worried man.

He said: "I was disappointed to lose the second set. I had chances and didn't take them. I was expecting him to come out with some big shots and he served well. It was a tough match.

Spain vs. USA Preview

Spain will attempt to claim their place in the Confederations Cup final when the take on the United States in Bloemfontein.

The European champions have already broken one world record during their stint in South Africa, with Saturday`s 2-0 victory over the host nation not only seeing Spain progress through Group A with a 100% record but also extending their run of successive wins to 15.

That saw them move one clear of Brazil, France and Australia, who all jointly held the former record along with the Spanish.

Saturday`s win also extended Spain`s unbeaten run to 35 matches, drawing them level with Brazil's world-leading mark that was set between between 1993 and 1996, and Vicente del Bosque`s side can take that record for their own tomorrow as well.

Spain are huge favourites to continue their remarkable form against a United States side that created a big stir in battling back from the brink to qualify from Group B, but midfielder Xabi Alonso is not taking anything for granted.

"If they are here it`s because they have deserved it," said Alonso, who was part of the Spain side that ground out a hard-fought 1-0 win over the US in a friendly last year, Xavi scoring the only goal 12 minutes from time.

Federer focused on title alone

Roger Federer will banish thoughts of creating tennis history as he seeks to regain his Wimbledon title.

Federer's victory in the French Open earlier this month saw him become only the sixth man to complete a career Grand Slam.

And a first triumph at Roland Garros also meant the Swiss star equalled Pete Sampras' record of 14 major titles.

The 27-year-old now has the chance to break that record at the All England Club, where he has already won five titles and was only denied a sixth in succession by Rafael Nadal in last year's epic final.

With Nadal absent this year through injury, Federer is the hot favourite to lift the trophy again come July 5, but the world number two is trying to keep thoughts of a record 15th grand slam at the back of his mind.

"In Paris it was just about trying to win my first Paris," Federer said.

"Then if it happens at the same time that I was able to tie Andre Agassi or Rod Laver by winning all four majors, or the 14 of Sampras, it was maybe very fitting that it all happened at once.

Kaka, currently in Brazil with the national team ahead of a World Cup qualifier against Uruguay, will sign up for five years and a salary worth nine million euros a year, it added.

AC Milan owner Silvio Berlusconi had hinted at 27-year-old Kaka's departure moments before Cadena Ser had claimed he was indeed moving.

"I do not know if we can keep Kaka at Milan because they (Real) have offered him so much money," Berlusconi was quoted as saying by Italian press agency Ansa.

It comes on the same day as Kaka - who was courted by English Premiership side Manchester City back in January - was telling La Gazzetto dello Sport he had no intention of quitting Milan.

"I'll tell you this for the last time, the very last. I don't want to leave Milan. To the millions of Milan fans, I tell you that I've made my choice. I've said I want to stay. Leave me in peace, please," Kaka told La Gazzetta dello Sport newspaper.

"I want to continue to win with Milan. And from today, all discussion is over."

Watch South Africa vs India Live Streaming

When the fixtures were drawn up for the ICC World Twenty20, few would have thought that the last match of Group E would be an inconsequential one. But that's how the results have panned out, thanks to India's insipid display and some outstanding planning by their opponents. South Africa will now look to implement the same tactics and ensure that they enter the semi-finals with an all-win record in the tournament.

South Africa have been mighty impressive in all aspects so far, handling the pressure moments better than most other teams. Their line-up for this game will be slightly weakened, though, by the absence of Jacques Kallis, who has been magnificent at the top of the order but will be rested ahead of bigger matches. His replacement won't make things any easier for the beleaguered Indian batsmen, however: Morne Morkel walks in for his first game of the tournament, and you can be sure he'll give the Indians another examination of short-pitched bowling. Kallis being rested will also give more batting opportunities to some of the others in the line-up, specifically JP Duminy, Albie Morkel and Mark Boucher, all of whom have played less than 30 balls in the tournament.

For India, this is the last chance to get some crumbs from a campaign that has gone terribly wrong. Their batsmen have been found wanting against the short stuff, and there's every chance they'll have to battle more of the same against Parnell, Steyn, Morkel and Co. With no pressure on the batsmen, though, it might just allow the Indian batsmen to break the shackles and bat with a freedom that wasn't seen in the last two games.

Four-star Chile hammer Bolivia

A brace by Alexis Sanchez helped Chile to destroy 10-man Bolivia 4-0 in South American World Cup qualifying.

Jean Bonsejour opened the scoring a minute before the break with a header from Matias Fernandez' right-wing cross before the hosts added three more goals in a late burst.

Mark Gonzalez doubled the advantage with a precise free-kick in the 74th minute, before Sanchez made it 3-0 four minutes later.

Sanchez added his second and Chile's fourth one minute before half-time, while his goal-scoring antics earned him a strong challenge from midfielder Ignacio Garcia who was subsequently sent off.

Marcelo Bielsa's side now have 26 points, one less than leaders Brazil and two ahead Paraguay. Brazil beat Paraguay 2-1 in Recife.

Elsewhere, Venezuela and Uruguay drew 2-2 at Cachamay stadium.

Giancarlo Maldonado opened the scoring after eight minutes, but Luis Suarez finally brought the Uruguayans level on the hour mark.

Ten minutes later Atletico Madrid's Diego Forlan put Uruguay ahead, but their lead lasted just three minutes as defender Jose Manuel Rey grabbed a point for Venezuela with a powerful free-kick from 25 meters.

The result meant Ecuador moved into fifth place following their 2-0 victory over Argentina. They now have 20 points, two more than Uruguay and three ahead of Venezuela.

Finally, in Medellin hosts Colombia beat bottom-side Peru 1-0 to keep them in with a slim chance of reaching fifth place and the play-off.

River Plate striker Radamel Falcao Garcia netted the only goal of the match in the 24th minute.

It was the first competitive Colombian goal in 210 minutes, as well as Falcao's first official goal with the national side.

Colombia are three points behind fifth-placed Ecuador.

Brazil come back against Paraguay

Brazil moved to the top of the South American Qualifying standings after coming from a goal down to beat Paraguay in Recife.

Salvador Cabanas put Paraguay ahead in the 26th minute with just the sixth goal against the Brazilians in 14 qualifying matches, but the hosts drew level before the break through Manchester City star Robinho before Nilmar struck the winner shortly after half-time.

The hosts started brighter as both Robinho and new Real Madrid signing Kaka tested Paraguay goalkeeper Justo Villar with long-range shots in the opening minute.

But they were knocked out of their stride mid-way through the first half when Cabanas was fouled by Juan on the edge of the area, and the America forward picked himself to fire home the resulting free kick.

After the goal Brazil went on the offensive but were restricted mainly to shots from range.

But four minutes before the break their attacking stance paid off as Dani Alves found Robinho in the box to pull Brazil level.

The hosts started the second half as they had ended the first, and within four minutes found themselves in front as Internacional forward Nilmar pounced on a rebound inside the six-yard box.

Villar kept his side in it as Kaka nearly set up Robinho for a third goal, before Dani Alves shaved the crossbar from a free-kick while the visitors never threatened a comeback.

"It was a very hard game, but we took a very important step towards the World Cup," said Robinho.

"We are not qualified yet," warned Kaka. "I want to thank all the fans from Recife, they supported us even when we were losing."

Brazil now leads the standings with 27 points, one ahead of Chile, three in front of Paraguay and five ahead of Argentina, who earlier lost 2-0 to Ecuador.

Brazil travel to Argentina next on September 5. Four games remain while the top four teams qualify for the South Africa tournament and the fifth-placed side goes to a play-off against the fourth-place nation in North and Central America and the Caribbean section.

England game not closed to public

The FA has confirmed that strikes will not result in England's game against Andorra being played behind closed doors.

Football Association chief executive Ian Watmore has confirmed threatened industrial action will not result in England's World Cup qualifier against Andorra tomorrow being played behind closed doors.

London is set to grind to a halt this evening with tube workers beginning a 48-hour strike,

The strike will have a massive impact on travel, with England's Group Six qualifier among the worst affected.

Wembley has always encouraged fans to travel on the tube network, but the FA has refused to alter their plans in the face of what is certain to be major disruption if the strike goes ahead.

"The game will kick off at 8.15 as planned tomorrow," Football Association chief executive Ian Watmore confirmed.

"It will not, repeat not, be played behind closed doors."

mfl

The FA took the decision last week to halt ticket sales at 70,000 for tomorrow's game and have held discussions with Brent Council and the Metropolitan Police to find the best way to deal with the situation.

"Since the threat of a tube strike started last week we have worked very co-operatively with all those parties involved," Watmore added. "I'd like to thank them for their help.

"Supporters should plan to travel as early as possible. The turnstiles will now open earlier, at 5.45pm, to limit disruption.

"Supporters attending should be prepared that, due to the planned industrial action, travelling in London will not be straightforward, and they should expect a disrupted journey."

Jayawardene happy to look forward

Mahela Jayawardene is delighted Sri Lanka have already cleared an especially tough first ICC World Twenty20 hurdle.

Sri lanka have progressed from the group stages at the expense of Australia.

Kumar Sangakkara's men, up against West Indies at Trent Bridge in a match between two teams who have already qualified for the Super Eights, knew from the outset they could go out early after such a tough draw.

Sri Lanka are through thanks to their six-wicket defeat of Australia, which on Monday sent Ricky Ponting's Ashes tourists out of the tournament.

They are due to come up against another of the men responsible for Australia's disappointment - Chris Gayle, whose match-winning 88 at The Oval was too much for Ponting and Co last weekend.

Gayle, however, injured himself batting in that match and may not risk a bruised knee against Sri Lanka.

Either way, Jayawardene is already much encouraged by Sri Lanka's achievements in the tournament so far.

"We were in a tough group - and one team out of Australia, West Indies and us had to pack their bags and go home," he reasons.

"We are glad that it is not us. I don't think Australia going out undermines the tournament, because there are still some good teams left who are playing good cricket.ayle himself was unsure whether he will be playing or not.

"I'm carrying a bit of an injury and I don't know if I might be playing yet - so it's a situation that we need to look at," he said, shortly before heading off to West Indies' net practice - at which he was intending to try to bat.

"I picked it up in the last game from a ball that (Mitchell) Johnson bowled - and I'm still struggling a bit with it.

"When I was batting I didn't feel it. But the next day I couldn't walk properly and I'm just trying to get back in my stride now. "The knee is swollen a lot and bruised a lot, so let's see what happens."

Fit or not, Gayle insists West Indies will not be taking the match lightly just because they have already qualified.

Their first Super Eights fixture comes two days later, against India at Lord's, and Gayle does not want a defeat to undermine confidence before that tough assignment.

"Every game is very important," he said."We really want to win to keep that momentum going into Friday's match."

Approaching Milestones:

Sri Lanka vs. West Indies

- Chris Gayle (349) requires 51 runs to become the first batsman for West Indies to aggregate 400 runs in Twenty20 Internationals.

- Sanath Jayasuriya (343) needs 57 runs to become the first batsman for Sri Lanka to make 400 runs in Twenty20 Internationals.

Head to Head:

- Sri Lanka and West Indies would be playing their first game in the Twenty20 Internationals.

- Sri Lanka have won 9 and lost 5 out of 14 played - winning % 64.29.

- West Indies have won 5 and lost 5 out of 12 played - winning % 41.67.

Irish could earn passage to India

Ireland have nothing to lose but perhaps a fortune to gain in their final ICC World Twenty20 group match against India.

William Porterfield's team are assured of their Super Eights progression, irrespective of the outcome against India at Trent Bridge tonight, thanks to their victory over Bangladesh at the same venue on Monday.

That result was hastened by Kevin O'Brien's unbeaten 39 from only 17 balls - and Porterfield concedes the all-rounder could just be one of his team capable of catching the eye of a mega-bucks Indian Premier League franchise, should he give another hint of his talents on the big stage.

"Kevin O'Brien showed what he could do against Bangladesh. He's one player in our team that can clear the ropes. If IPL is in the back of his mind, he did himself no harm.

"It would be great if one of our guys did get signed up."Approaching milestones

- Gautam Gambhir (378) requires 22 runs to become the first batsman to amass 400 runs in Twenty20 Internationals for India.

- Gambhir (277) needs 23 runs to become the first batsman to aggregate 300 runs in the ICC World Twenty20.

Head to Head

- India and Ireland would be playing against each other for the first time in Twenty20 Internationals.

- In case of an Indian win, Ireland would be recording their first ever defeat in Twenty20 Internationals. They have won four out of five contested while their game against the Netherlands could not produce result.

- India have won eight and lost four out of 14 contested (1 NR, 1 Tied) - winning % 57.14.

"India need miracle to defend title"

Ravi Shastri feels it would be nothing short of a miracle if India retains the ICC World Twenty20 title.

The former India skipper believes cricket's shortest format is very fickle in nature.

"It would be miraculous if India indeed goes on to defend its crown," said the former all-rounder when asked about India's chances at the event.

Meanwhile, rival teams are busy planning a blueprint against defending champions India as critical Super Eight clashes of the ICC World Twenty20 loom later this week.ntroducing Yusuf Pathan as early as in the third over turned out to be Dhoni's master-stroke as the off-spinner broke Bangladesh's opening stand just when it started looking dangerous. Dhoni said with the pacers proving ineffective, he had to try something different.

"See, Yusuf is one of those bowlers who are very consistent. Even in IPL, we have seen part-time bowlers like Rohit Sharma and Suresh Raina doing a great job. So if nothing works, you better try something out of the box than just going with the fast bowlers," he explained.

Gayle relishing Twenty20 showpiece

Chris Gayle believes the second ICC World T20 tournament is the ideal stage for up-and-coming players to showcase their worth.

West Indies captain Gayle, who recently caused a stir by revealing a preference for 20-over cricket over more traditional forms of the game, is excited by the exposure of the second global gathering in England this month.

West Indies are in the toughest of all groups and take on Australia on Saturday at the Oval as well as Sri Lanka.

Despite their challenging draw, however, and a terrible set of results since arriving on tour here in April, Gayle views this international competition as a shop window for future franchise deals in a fast-changing 20-over market.

I try to stick to my strength, says Gayle

"It's a huge thing," said Gayle. "It's good for players to be able to make a name for themselves in this format of the game. You never know what the future might hold for them."

Gayle's hundred against South Africa two years ago remains the only one in Twenty20's short international history and he will be employing his usual method of brute force rather than adopting any of the trendy flicks and sweeps of his contemporaries.

"The only extra option for my game is to try to pick up more singles," Gayle said. "I am not too much into the fancy strokes. I try to stick to my strength, which is power: once I get it right I will clear the boundary, so I have to back myself in certain situations.

"I am an attacking person, and hopefully that can bring a lot of joy and smiling in the crowd. The environment is brilliant when Twenty20 is going on. When Test match cricket is going on it is a bit more laid back and quiet."

Gayle sat out the warm-up thrashing by England in midweek after blitzing seven sixes in an unbeaten 88 against Scotland - and will return to lead a team including fellow Indian Premier League players Dwayne Bravo and Fidel Edwards.

Gabon maintain streak and go top
Gabon, Tunisia and Burkina Faso all maintained their 100 per cent winning records in African World Cup qualifying.
The biggest surprise came in Libreville, where Azingo Nationale moved to the top of Group A by thumping 10-man Togo 3-0.
Bruno Manga got the hosts off to a flying start with an 11th minute strike and Thomas Dossevi's dismissal five minutes before half-time made it difficult for the visitors to launch any comeback.
And so it proved with further goals from Roguy Meye (56) and Moise Apanga (83) sealing what turned out to be a comfortable win.
The Gabonese now have six points from two games, three more than Togo, while Cameroon and Morocco, who meet tomorrow in Yaounde, are yet to get off the mark.
Tunisia stayed top of Group B thanks to a first-half penalty from Wissem Ben Yahia (21) and an injury-time goal from Oussama Darragi.
The win for the hosts in Rades keeps them five points clear at the summit, with Nigeria and Kenya playing later in the weekend.
In Chililabombwe, Rainford Kalaba scored the only goal 11 minutes from time as Zambia stole all the points against Rwanda.
Herve Renard's team are now top of Group C on four points, with Egypt and Algeria, the other two teams in the pool, set to meet tomorrow.
Finally, the Stallions of Burkina Faso had star striker Moumouni Dagano to thank for their narrow 1-0 win over Malawi in Blantyre.
The home side, who were thumped 5-0 by Ivory Coast in their opening game, held out until the 70th minute when the Al-Khor striker finally managed to break the deadlock and steal all the points for his side.
They are now strongly placed with six points, three more than the Ivorians, who travel to Conakry to face Guinea tomorrow.

Who will win ICC T20 World Cup 2009?

CC World Twenty20 starts this June 5 at England. 12 countries will participate in this event. India, Australia, Pakistan, Bangladesh, South Africa, New Zealand, West Indies, Sri Lanka, Scotland, Ireland and Netherlands will be participatng on this event.
Who Will Win the ICC World Twenty20 (T20 World Cup) 2009

India are the defending Champions of the Cup which was played 2 years ago in South Africa. Every team looks better and better this time as they have collected more experience in this form of the game recently. Pakistan were the runner-up of the inaugural. Australia have recently lost their world's no.1 spot in ODI but still are very strong team.

England
, being the host country, would give their best for the T20 cup. South Africa is the no.1 spotted in ODI ranking and their team looks in great form for the T20 World Cup in England. South African players have great season international cricket and recently played IPL in SA.

Sri Lanka have the new captain this time and they would really like to forget the Pakistan event. This team is line-up as the mixture of both greatly experienced one and youngsters. New Zealand team lead by Vettori would like grab the cup first international ICC event. West Indies team seemed worse on the England last month as they had to give up against England in both test an ODIs but this format is different and they love to remember the ICC Champions trophy win some years back in the same country. But the problem is that they may not reach the semis as they are in the group with Australia and Sri Lanka.

Bangladesh
is placed with India and Ireland so this seems that they have great chance to qualify for the semis but would definitely go further and prove themselves. The non-test playing nations Ireland, Scotland and Netherlands cannot be underestimated.

Tough Competition this year in England. Now, you have the chance make your predictions.

Vote for your team and Please post your comments on why the team you chose can win.

Desperate Punjab up against Delhi

Having already secured a place in the semi-finals, Delhi would be keen to continue the good work when they take on Punjab today.

If Delhi are on a high after becoming the first team to qualify for the last four stage with 16 points from 10 matches, Punjab have been laid low by some rather inconsistent performance that see them second from the bottom of the points table in the eight-team event.

They Yuvraj Singh-led side desperately need a victory against the marauding Daredevils if they hope to make it to the semi-finals but doing so will be one huge task given the rich vein of form the Delhi is going through right now.

Kings XI Punjab need to pull out something special of the hat and one man who can do that is skipper Yuvraj himself. He had a rather sedate tournament so far and is long overdue a big score.

The others too need to chip in and if their last encounter against Mumbai Indians is anything to go by, then a lot need to be done in their batting department.

Formidable

To add to that Mahela's Jayawardene's hamstring injury still remains a matter of concern for the Punjab thinktank. The Sri Lankan didn't feature in the last match after sustaining the injury against Deccan Chargers on May 9.

The bowling has improved with Brett Lee's arrival but lacks the bite despite the presence of left-arm pacers Yusuf Abdulla and Irfan Pathan. S Sreesanth has been a big disappointment for the Kings XI with the maverick right-arm pacer scalping just one wicket from his three outings conceding huge runs.

The Kings XI bowling will be tested to the limit against a formidable Daredevils batting line-up that boasts the likes of Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir, David Warner, AB de Villiers, Tillakaratne Dilshan and Dinesh Karthik. All of them are in fine form and the best part of Delhi's batting is that even if one fails, the rest are there to shoulder the burden.

The bowling department too is quite balanced with youngsters Pradeep Sangwan and Rajat Bhatia giving Ashish Nehra and Dirk Nannes good company. In Amit Mishra, Delhi have a quality spinner who can put the opposition in all sorts of trouble.

Still, bowling could be a cause of concern for Sehwag especially after the manner in which Adam Gilchrist and Andrew Symonds hammered their way in the last match.

It needed a Bhatia special to turn things around for Delhi but Sehwag must be aware that such things don't happen everyday.

Kings XI Punjab would also hope that for once the Delhi batting fails to fire for it will be their only hope for survival in this year's IPL.

Approaching milestones

- Yuvraj Singh (296) needs four runs to become the first
batsman to aggregate 300 runs in the second edition of
the IPL.

- Tillakaratne Dilshan (286) requires 14 runs to become
the second batsman from Delhi Daredevils to aggregate
300 runs in the second edition of the IPL. Abraham
de Villiers (315) was the first to achieve the feat.

- Ashish Nehra (15) needs two wickets to overtake
Rudra Pratap Singh's tally of 16 in the second edition
of the IPL and to become the leading wicket-taker.

Royals go to battle without Warne

Rajasthan Royals will be a lesser force when they take on in-form Mumbai Indians in a crucial IPL match today.

The Royals would be without their inspirational skipper Shane Warne ruled out owing to a hamstring injury.

Warne's hamstring injury means his much-anticipated face-off with Mumbai skipper Sachin Tendulkar, which was prevented by rain the last time around, will not happen yet again.

Both the teams are tied on 11 points after 11 games but Mumbai is ahead on net run rate at the fourth spot and tomorrow's match might prove be crucial in deciding the semifinal spots.

Latest Standings

Rajasthan's current form is not too encouraging and after the team lost to Chennai Super Kings and Deccan Chargers in its last two matches, Warne's imposing presence would surely be missed by the defending champions.

Mumbai, on the other hand, seems to have recovered from a hat-trick of losses and have registered two back-to-back wins over Royal Challengers Bangalore and Kings XI Punjab to put their campaign back on track.

The team's batting looks solid with Tendulkar in sublime form and JP Duminy emerging as the middle order mainstay. Among others, Dwayne Bravo has also been among the runs while Ajinkya Rahane is in sparkling form.

Sanath Jayasuriya's form, however, remains a concern and Tendulkar would expect the Sri Lankan to wriggle out of the bad patch tomorrow and play his natural, swashbuckling cricket. Mumbai bowlers are not doing too badly and injured pace spearhead Zaheer Khan's absence has not been felt much.

Lasith Malinga and Harbhajan Singh have combined to lead the attack well, although the fiery off-spinner has complained that he is not aware of his role in the team.

Royals depending on Smith to deliver

In comparison, Rajasthan's batting is too reliant on Graeme Smith and Yusuf Pathan although Naman Ojha, who was initially sent back, has turned out to be quite a surprise package.

However, the unavailability of pacers Kamran Khan and Amit Singh, both of whom were found guilty of having a suspect action, has taken the bite out of Rajasthan's bowling attack.

And with the talismanic Warne, known to surprise the opposition with unconventional and often successful bowling changes, missing from action, it would be interesting to see how Rajasthan reacts to tight situations in the match.

Approaching milestones

- Shane Warne (30) needs two wickets to overtake Rudra Pratap Singh's tally of 31 wickets in the IPL and to regain the top spot in terms of wicket-aggregate.

- Sachin Tendulkar (455) needs 45 runs to complete his 500 runs in the IPL.

- Sanath Jayasuriya (689) requires 11 runs to complete his 700 runs in the IPL. The top three batsmen in terms of run-aggregate in the IPL are: Adam Gilchrist (765), Suresh Raina (730) and Gautam Gambhir (730).

- Jean-Paul Duminy (297) needs three runs to become the fifth batsman to aggregate 300 runs or more in the second edition of the IPL. The top run-getters are Matthew Hayden (426), Adam Gilchrist (329), Abraham de Villiers (315) and Suresh Raina (309).

Watch Delhi Daredevils vs Deccan Chargers ipl match live streaming

Durban: Deccan Chargers Hyderabad will be looking to brighten their chances of making the semi-finals in the Indian Premier League (IPL) when they face table toppers Delhi Daredevils on Wednesday.

Daredevils are almost through to the last four with 14 points from nine matches and a win against Deccan Chargers at the Kingsmead will only make them feel comfortable at the top.

Daredevils are on a three-match winning streak and will like to carry the momentum against Deccan Chargers, who defeated defending champions Rajasthan Royals in their last match.

For Daredevils, skipper Virender Sehwag will be back but his return will create some selection problems regarding David Warner's place in the team. Warner has been in good form in the tournament and the Australian will have to sit out.

With Ashish Nehra, Pradeep Sangwan and Dirk Nannes bowling well, legendary Australian fast bowler Glenn McGrath is likely to warm the bench again.

Deccan Chargers are high on confidence after defeating Rajasthan Royals. A win against Daredevils will give them 14 points from 11 matches and that will obviously brighten their chances of making it to the semi-finals.

Deccan Chargers batting has been bolstered with the return of Andrew Symonds. Rohit Sharma has been performing well both with the bat and ball. But it will need an all-round performance by the Deccan Chargers to beat the formidable Delhi Daredevils.

The battle gets more intense

Fireworks are on cards when Mumbai Indians face Kings XI Punjab on Today in a crucial IPL fixture in Centurion.

Though Mumbai's losing streal might have finally ended but the road to semifinals remains tough as they take on an equally desperate Punjab in Centurion.

Just one point separates the two teams on the championship table with Punjab ahead at the fifth spot after 10 matches. In fact, Punjab had got the better of Mumbai when the two teams faced off the first time around in the event.

Mumbai are also through with 10 matches, having notched up four wins against five losses and a washout. Sachin Tendulkar's men endured a three-match losing streak before finally managing a win against Royal Challengers Bangalore Monday night.

Brett Lee boost

Punjab have been strengthened by the arrival of Australian pacer Brett Lee, who impressed with both bat and ball in the nail-biting win over Deccan Chargers in his first IPL match this season.

Among the batsmen, Mahela Jayawardene scored a fifty against Deccan and will have to play a key role in the middle order.

Kumar Sangakkara and skipper Yuvraj Singh have been in good touch and it would be quite a task for the Mumbai bowlers to contain them if they get going

Mumbai's spirit has been lifted by last night's win over Royal Challengers Bangalore. South African J P Duminy's consistent scoring has taken care of the inconsistency of the opening pair of Sanath Jayasuriya and Tendulkar. But for Mumbai to do well, Tendulkar and Jayasuriya have to click at the top as Duminy may not be able to bail the side out in every match.

Bowling weak without Zaheer

The bowling has been hit badly by Zaheer Khan's absence. The pacer has been unavailable for the past three matches due to a shoulder injury and his absence has taken the bite out of Mumbai's attack.

Star off-spinner Harbhajan Singh's inconsistent form hasn't helped the team's cause either.

Both the teams have lost some close encounters and it would be interesting to see how the two captains -- Tendulkar and Yuvraj -- respond if the match turns out to be a humdinger.

With the race to semifinals heating up, the contest is of immense significance as both Mumbai and Punjab are locked in an intense battle to be among the top-four.

Approaching milestones

- Mumbai Indians would certainly like to improve their record against Kings XI Punjab. They have lost all their previous three matches against Kings XI Punjab - by 66 runs at Mohali; by 1 run at Mumbai and by 3 runs at Durban.
- Sanath Jayasuriya (685) needs 15 runs to complete his 700 runs in the IPL and to join Suresh Raina (730), Gautam Gambhir (711) and Adam Gilchrist (701).
- Jean-Paul Duminy (297) requires 3 runs to become the third batsman to complete 300 runs or more in the second edition of the IPL. Matthew Hayden (426) and Suresh Raina (309) are the only two batsmen to have made 300 runs in the second edition.

RCB looks to bounce back

Royal Challengers Bangalore gets an opportunity to bounce back when it takes on tournament laggard Kolkata Knight Riders today.

Just a week back, Bangalore was on a high, fourth in the Indian Premier League table on the back of three successive victories.

But seven days can prove to be pretty long in this slam bang format of the game which the Royal Challengers found out much to their dismay.

Two defeats -- against Mumbai Indians and Rajasthan Royals -- and the Anil Kumble-led side has slipped to seventh in the table and would be desperate to make amends when it takes on the battered Kolkata.

With eight defeats to its credit, the Brendon McCullum-led Kolkata has no worries of slipping up further, and that is the only plus for the side which has been ripped apart by all the teams.

Launchpad

Its armour rusty and motivation having reached nadir, this team offers Royal Challengers a perfect launchpad in its bid to reclaim a spot in the top half of the table.

But consistency seems to be the worrying factor for Bangalore and much depends on the batting prowess of Jacques Kallis, Mark Boucher, Rahul Dravid and Robin Uthappa to set things right.

The experienced Kumble leads the bowlers and is still capable of putting the spanner on the opposition provided he gets some support from the other end. Praveen Kumar and Dillon du Preez have had decent outings and against a faltering Kolkata, they ought to fancy their chances.

But the Royal Challengers would be doing themselves harm if they choose to be complacent against an outfit, which despite an abundance of talent, hasn't performed as a team.

Good pace

Still, there's a thin line between hope and despair and one good outing could change all that.

They certainly have the wherewithal in McCullum -- runs are long overdue from his bat -- Sourav Ganguly, Brad Hodge and the big-hitting David Hussey, who is back after Australia duty.

The bowling looks a bit suspect and though Ishant Sharma and Ajit Agarkar are generating good pace, wickets seem to be hard to come by.

Kolkata would also be hoping for some luck, which it seems it have left behind while heading for the rainbow nation, as it attempts to avoid the dubious record of registering the most number of defeats in the tournament, one that is held by Deccan Chargers (12).

Watch United rule out further appeal live streaming

Manchester United have ruled out any further attempt to overturn Darren Fletcher's Champions League final ban.

UEFA had earlier rejected United's protest against the Scotland midfielder's red card in the semi-final against Arsenal and although the club have the right of a further appeal it was made clear they stood little chance of success.

Barcelona's protests over defenders Eric Abidal and Dani Alves were also rejected by UEFA's control and disciplinary committee today, and those players too will miss the final in Rome on May 27.

A United spokesman said: "Darren is an honest player and we felt we should do what we could to try and help him become eligible for the Champions League final by initially protesting his dismissal.

"However, we respect the referee's decision and we will therefore not be appealing against today's ruling."

UEFA said both United and Barcelona had missed the deadline for filing A protest but that there were no grounds for overturning suspensions in any case.

The ban will come as a huge blow for Fletcher, a non-playing substitute at last season's final, who was sent off by Italian referee Roberto Rosetti for denying Arsenal's Cesc Fabregas a goal-scoring chance - television replays showed however he seemed to have won the ball.

Abidal's red card against Chelsea was also viewed as harsh though Alves' caution that will see him miss the final looked straightforward.

A UEFA statement said: "Even if they had been admitted they would have been rejected as unfounded as there were no grounds for contesting the referees' original decisions."

Shane Warne's tactics give Rajasthan Royals an edge over Adam Gilchrist's Deccan Chargers when the two face off on Monday.

Both the sides are smarting from defeats in previous matches.

Warne and Gilchrist, two men who never got along while playing together for Australia, lock horns as rival skippers at Kimberley's De Beers Diamond Oval for the second time in IPL as the race for the semifinals heats up.

Warne had the last laugh in the previous encounter and Gilchrist would be eager to get even with the man with whom he shared one of the most successful partnerships as a wicketkeeper for Australia but could never get along beyond that.

In fact, the Warne-Gilchrist rivalry adds a different dimension to the contest between two sides, evenly matched as far as batting is concerned.

Deccan batting looking good

For Deccan, Andrew Symonds has made a late entry to the team and has made a brilliant start, scoring a 36-ball 60 in the match against Kings XI Punjab.

Gilchrist, himself, has been in a good touch and Herschelle Gibbs hasn't done too bad either. Add to this, Rohit Sharma's consistency and Deccan's line-up looks formidable.

But Rajasthan's batting is no less with openers Naman Ojha and Graeme Smith in fine form. In Yusuf Pathan, Rajasthan has the aggressor who can change the course of a match. Warne, himself, is no novice with the bat.

Bowling could be the difference

It is the bowling, perhaps, which gives Rajasthan the slight edge.

Pacer Amit Singh -- reported for suspect action but allowed to play until the IPL technical committee decides on his fate -- has wrecked havoc whenever he has been given the ball.

Left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja is also among the wickets and adding to the team's bowling strength is the captain-cum-coach Warne himself.

In contrast, pace spearhead R P Singh has not been too consistent for Deccan.

The part-time spin of Rohit and Symonds cannot be relied upon to win matches, especially the close games, as was proved in the last-over loss to Kings XI Punjab, even though Gilchrist insists that bowling is not a concern.

That Gilchrist is an inspiring leader cannot be doubted considering the way he has turned Deccan into a competitive team after last season's flop show but Warne's ability to surprise the opposition will give him the edge in MOnday's match.

Approaching milestones
- For both the teams, the forthcoming encounter would be a vital one. Both teams have won five games each so far in the second edition of the IPL.
- Deccan Chargers, in case of a win, would be registering their first victory over Rajasthan. Rajasthan have won all the previous three encounters against Deccan Chargers - by 3 wickets at Hyderabad; by 8 wickets at Jaipur and by 3 wickets at Port Elizabeth.
- Adam Gilchrist (691) requires only 9 runs to complete his 700 runs in the IPL.

Newcastle vs Middlesbrough

Middlesbrough boss Gareth Southgate will be at odds with former England team-mate Alan Shearer when the pair meet in a do-or-die battle at St James` Park on Monday night.

Shearer, who took on the task of dragging Newcastle out of the Barclays Premier League relegation zone last month, admitted on Thursday the latest Tyne-Tees derby is the biggest game of even his illustrious career.

But while victory for the Magpies would take them out of the bottom three after Hull's home defeat by Stoke, Southgate insists the crucial contest is only the most important because it is the next one.

Full-back Andrew Taylor returns to Boro`s squad after recovering from a hip flexor problem.

However, skipper Emanuel Pogatetz will miss the rest of the season with the knee injury which has sidelined him for the last four games, and Chris Riggott (ankle) is also still out.

Southgate said: "It's pointless going back to games you have played in the past.

"You would have to question whether this is bigger than the game where we had waited 128 years to win a trophy - you have to question whether it is bigger than a European final.

"But, because it's the next game and the task ahead of us is to stay in the league, yes it is - but last week's was and next week's will be.

"There's a sense of perspective in that. We love to hype matches - this obviously has tremendous importance for both teams, and other teams at the bottom of the table, but there are still two more games to play after it.

"If we win, we still need other results to get ourselves over the line."

Southgate and Shearer won 120 England caps between them, many of them together, and were part of the team which came agonisingly close to reaching the final of Euro '96, with the defender missing the crucial penalty in the semi-final shoot-out with Germany.

Southgate then captained Boro to Carling Cup glory in 2004, and led them out out for the UEFA Cup final in Eindhoven two seasons later.

However, while the prize at stake in the remaining three games of the campaign might be more modest - at least in non-financial terms - he has ordered his players to relish the challenge.

He said: "It's very difficult to put into that context, really, because they are chances to win something and be part of history that will be forever remembered by your supporters.

"This is a different sort of challenge. But the one thing I would say is you should relish that challenge."

Newcastle defender Habib Beye has urged his Newcastle team-mates to adopt Shearer's winning mentality to hand the manager a first victory just when he needs it most.

Joey Barton begins his three-match suspension after being sent off at Liverpool on Sunday, while Alan Smith is a major doubt with a thigh problem.

Left-back Jose Enrique is struggling to shake off his hamstring injury, but central defender Steven Taylor (ankle) has returned to training after two games on the sidelines and could figure.

The Magpies face their derby rivals knowing a first three-point haul since February 7 would lift them above Hull on goal difference and out of the relegation zone with just two games to play.

They are equally well aware that the alternative is simply not an option, and Beye knows the time has come to deliver a maiden victory in six attempts for Shearer.

Beye said: "He is still strong, when he is playing with us in training, he is still really strong, and he is a winner.

"You can see when he plays all the small games sometimes with us, he wants to win every game, and that's the mentality we must have.

"He has done a great job for us with [assistant] Iain Dowie. I believe we will stay in the Premier League and I hope for the club he will stay next year and bring something good for the next year."

Shearer's continued presence on Tyneside - he has insisted all along that his return to St James' would last just eight games, although there is a growing feeling he is ready to commit himself for a longer period - will depend on a series of factors, although relegation or otherwise may not be one of them.

But in the short term, the only focus is on avoiding a drop which would have been unthinkable just a few years ago as the home-grown talisman led the fight for honours on the pitch.

And a derby win would at least give the club the springboard they so desperately need.

Shearer said: "It would be massive, without a doubt. It would give everyone a huge lift confidence-wise, belief-wise."
