Sources said since the IPL drugs inquiry tribunal had already banned Asif for one year from September 2008 for failing a dope test during the first edition of the Twenty20 event, senior PCB officials believed that the punishment was enough for the right-arm fast bowler.

"Look he has already been under suspension since July 15 by the board as well, so by September this year he would serve more than one year's suspension," one official said.

Asif had already claimed that he didn't know the substance which was in his possession was opium, instead he was of the view that it was a herbal medicine prescribed by a local Hakeem.
