Yuvraj, already down after dropping Taylor when he was four, then missed another chance from Franklin. The failure brought back memories of the last tour to Australia, when Yuvraj's miserable form with the bat infected his fielding to such an extent that he plummeted to the lower half of one of the worst fielding outfits in the world. India will hope that this time, the mutual deterioration will not repeat itself.
It ended a day when India's bowlers were much too profligate. By far the weakest Test batting outfit in the world except Bangaldesh and Zimbabwe, New Zealand were able to rattle along at almost four runs per over. The Indians were often too short and width was readily offered. Over 85% of Ryder's runs came square of the wicket, and Taylor scored a century in the region alone. Ryder will resume tomorrow on 137, accompanied by Franklin on 26.
