Sources said since the IPL drugs inquiry tribunal had already banned Asif for one year from September 2008 for failing a dope test during the first edition of the Twenty20 event, senior PCB officials believed that the punishment was enough for the right-arm fast bowler.

"Look he has already been under suspension since July 15 by the board as well, so by September this year he would serve more than one year's suspension," one official said.

Asif had already claimed that he didn't know the substance which was in his possession was opium, instead he was of the view that it was a herbal medicine prescribed by a local Hakeem.

The committee was formed by the PCB Chairman to probe into Asif's detention in Dubai which took place last year in June while the pacer was returning from India after playing in the Indian Premier League.

Although the authorities found 0.24 grams of opium in his possession, the Dubai public prosecutor did not press for any charges against the pacer and was later deported home.The three-member committee would be submitting its recommendations to the Pakistan Cricket Board Chairman Ejaz Butt few days after the conclusion of the second test against Sri Lanka on March 5 and if board sources were to be believed the committee is likely to recommend just a fine on Asif and not penalties.

"We were supposed to wind up our inquiry by end of this month but due to unavailability of some documents the hearing has been delayed a bit. But we intend to finalise our recommendations and submit it to the PCB by middle of next month," a member in the inquiry committee said today.

Pakistan's most successful captain Imran Khan was not present at the ceremony held at the tea break of the second Test against Sri Lanka. "He couldn't attend because of his political commitments," one board official said.
