Virender Sehwag took over as captain and the absence of Dhoni did nothing to prevent opening bowlers Zaheer Khan and Ishant Sharma from taking three New Zealand wickets in the first hour.

Ishant had Tim McIntosh (12) caught behind by Dinesh Karthik, while Zaheer bowled Jamie How (one) and had Martin Guptill caught by Sehwag in the gully for eight to leave the hosts floundering.

The scenario was reminiscent of the first Test in the three-match series at Seddon Park when New Zealand never recovered after slumping to 61-6 in the first session of the match.

The 25-year-old Taylor however, chose not to temper his aggressive strokemaking despite the precarious position before lunch, taking New Zealand to 98-3 by the break.

After lunch he produced several anxious moments while on 99 and almost ran out Ryder while searching for a quick single before he brought up his third Test century with an edged drive behind point for his 18th boundary from 151 balls.

Yuvraj, already down after dropping Taylor when he was four, then missed another chance from Franklin. The failure brought back memories of the last tour to Australia, when Yuvraj's miserable form with the bat infected his fielding to such an extent that he plummeted to the lower half of one of the worst fielding outfits in the world. India will hope that this time, the mutual deterioration will not repeat itself.

It ended a day when India's bowlers were much too profligate. By far the weakest Test batting outfit in the world except Bangaldesh and Zimbabwe, New Zealand were able to rattle along at almost four runs per over. The Indians were often too short and width was readily offered. Over 85% of Ryder's runs came square of the wicket, and Taylor scored a century in the region alone. Ryder will resume tomorrow on 137, accompanied by Franklin on 26.

Taylor's 151 was just three runs shy of his highest Test score and included 26 boundaries and one six, while Ryder was unbeaten on 137 when play ended at McLean Park.

James Franklin was 26 not out but was lucky to be there after surviving a caught behind appeal and seeing Yuvraj Singh drop him in the slips. But Taylor and Ryder turned the tide superbly, hitting boundaries all round the ground as the previously dominant Indians were given a taste of their own medicine.

The Indians suffered a setback even before the Test began when captain MS Dhoni was a late withdrawal with a back problem.

But they would have been buoyed by the start they had with Tim McIntosh, Martin Guptill and Jamie How - in for the injured Daniel Flynn - all dismissed early.
