India opted to bowl first and seemers Ishant Sharma, Zaheer Khan and Munaf Patel set about orchestrating one of their country's best opening sessions in Test history.
They gave New Zealand's openers the first hour before the wickets began to fall, as Martin Guptill, Daniel Flynn and Tim McIntosh were picked off in quick succession by Zaheer Khan and Ishant Sharma.
Test debutant Guptill was the first to go when he edged Kahn to Rahul Dravid in the slips after reaching 14, leaving the total on 17 for one.
His replacement, Flynn, lasted just three balls before he too fell foul to Kahn, caught behind by MS Dhoni off a leg-side delivery for no runs.
