Earlier, a medical examination failed to trace anything serious about his injury, making the Proteas hopeful about availability of the 33-year-old cricketer in the first ODI in Durban.
Kallis captained the Proteas in absence of the injured skipper Graeme Smith in the Cape Town Test, during which he broke down with a groin-muscle injury while bowling on the last day of the match.
"It was thought that he had a tear. But the scans showed he has no tear which is very good news, just some scar tissue," a team spokesman was quoted as saying by the Australian Associated Press.
