Waugh says he is confident Hayden would have performed well if he had kept playing, but he knew it was time to move on.

"It's always difficult towards the end, there's a lot of speculation about your position in the side," he said.

"[He had] one of those runs where he's had a couple of tough decisions, a couple of run-outs and things haven't gone his way
