Harbhajan Singh also played his part by taking two wickets before Ishant Sharma dismissed captain Daniel Vettori as New Zealand trail India by 239 runs with three wickets remaining in the first innings.

Tim Southee was unbeaten on one at the break while Brendon McCullum was seven not out.

India had resumed at 375 for nine this morning but added just four more runs before Sharma (18) was caught behind by McCullum from Chris Martin's delivery.

McIntosh and Guptill got New Zealand's response underway but the latter was dismissed with just 21 runs on the board when he deflected Khan's delivery onto his stumps in the seventh over.

The hosts added just 10 more runs before Khan struck again when Flynn, who had lasted just eight deliveries, got an edge to wicketkeeper MS Dhoni.

Gautam Gambhir before the two fell in quick succession helped them to 101 for two at lunch.

But the hosts' four-pronged pace attack went to work in the second session as the wickets of Sachin Tendulkar, VVS Laxman and Yuvraj Singh all tumbled. MS Dhoni was six not out while Rahul Dravid was unbeaten on 31.

The hosts made two changes to the side that drew in Napier recently with Daniel Flynn returning from a hand injury while Tim Southee replaced offspinner Jeetan Patel.

For India, meanwhile, skipper Dhoni returned after missing the second test with a back injury.

The visitors made a strong start as the runs flowed from the outset and Sehwag had racked up seven fours and one six to close in on 50.

Dhoni said the back injury that kept him out of the second Test in Napier has improved a lot even though he was not willing to commit whether he would play tomorrow.

"My back has improved a lot. But we have to see how I am before the game," Dhoni said.

"In a limited overs match, you know the maximum you can keep is 50 overs, but on a good, flat track in a Test you will have to be ready for 120 overs. I will have to see how I am tomorrow morning," he said."I am not that kind of player that the team relies on me a lot. Whether I am playing or not, will not have much impact on the team," Dhoni said.

Dhoni was wearing a support for his back at the nets even though he went through the chores to indicate that he might play the decider starting at the Basin Reserve.

A defiant ninth-wicket partnership between Brendon McCullum (84) and Iain O'Brien delayed the inevitable as their 76-run stand pushed the hosts to 279, but needing just just 39 for victory. Gautam Gambhir (30 not out) "It has been all-round performance that has seen us do consistently well. We just needed a break and that break I thought we got in Zimbabwe (2001) which came after a long time," he said.

"After that we went to the West Indies and won a Test there. We went to England and won. We went to South Africa, we won. We did that in Australia as well. So wherever we have travelled we have created an impact. That is what the nation was looking for and we are glad we have done it," Tendulkar added.
"Tendulkar, Laxman and Dravid and the likes have been in pretty much every situation that you can be as a batsman so for them it's just a matter of replicating that each time they go out.

Speaking about the ongoing series, the Mumbaikar said, "It has been fantastic so far and we are looking forward to the rest of the tour. If we win the Test series
"We're having to go out there and learn situations as they unfold. It can be tough but we've also got the blueprint to follow when we're out there playing. It's staring us in the face every time they bat."

Gautam Gambhir (255), VVS Laxman (230) and Rahul Dravid (219). If Sehwag, who has been magnanimous in offering his wicket on a platter in both the Tests, can churn out a substantial score, the flightless Kiwis' wings could be clipped on their favorite hunting ground. If they amange to win they will notch their first Test win in New Zealand in 34 years when they take on New Zealand in the third and final match of the series on Friday.

They have already exposed the chinks in New Zealand's batting in two deadly spells at Hamilton (60 for 6 in the first session) and Napier (23 for three). If the aisle truly assists the quicks, the striking-twosome should be a force to reckon with.

Zaheer Khan and Ishant Sharma have the reputation of bowling out Ricky Ponting's Aussies on flatter and drier wickets at home.

They have already exposed the chinks in New Zealand's batting in two deadly spells at Hamilton (60 for 6 in the first session) and Napier (23 for three). If the aisle truly assists the quicks, the striking-twosome should be a force to reckon with.

Jesse Ryder by far has been the best Kiwi batsman, making 102, 21 and 201 in three visits to the wicket, though Brendon McCullum has held the innings together with some plucky performances (3, 84 and 115) down the order.India's performance over the last 18 months has been the envy of every Test playing nation, a duration in which they have beaten the best in exacting situations.

The first casualty of this chopping business started with fielding coach - the former Indian wicketkeeper Samir Dighe, who was promptly replaced by Johnty Rhodes.

Similar fate was in store for Sydney-based former India pacer Subroto Banerjee, who didn't get an extension after first year.

At the same time, the Mumbai Indian management has appointed Shaun Pollock, who is a player with the team as the bowling coach cum the mentor of the team.Sources have further added that pattern of hire and fire in the Mumbai Indians points to the unhappiness of the management over the friends of Tendulkar, who the management thought, proved to be unyielding.

In the times of accountability, those who have been fired are still trying to figure out the reason of their ouster.
