India has four batsmen in the top 20 - Gautam Gambhir in 12th place and Virender Sehwag in 15th - not to mention Sachin Tendulkar in 21st position, compared to New Zealand's single representation in Ross Taylor, who is placed 16th.

But it is the Black Caps bowling that has most impressed of late with captain Daniel Vettori currently leading the rankings and Kyle Mills now in third spot, with a third bowler, Jacob Oram, in 19th place.

In contrast, India has just one bowler in the top 20 with Zaheer Khan occupying the 12th position.Mahendra Singh Dhoni's team is currently third, four ratings points behind second-placed Australia and five points behind the top team South Africa.

Dhoni is currently enjoying the top spot in the rankings for batsmen but team-mate Yuvraj Singh is hot on his heels in third position.

Indian fast bowlers should look to pitch the ball up a bit on the Kiwi wickets.
He also sounded confident about the bowlers, saying the bowlers would not let the team down.

Zaheer Khan is a senior pro, so they know what to do."Lal opined the Kiwis are not going to be any pushovers and they will battle hard.
"New Zealand are very keen to win against India. They did well against Australia, South Africa and Sri Lanka and are on a confident roll."

If India began their 48-day sojourn as the favourites, the tide has cruelly turned against them.

They have been outdone by a set of talented all-rounders, who could be classified as batsmen-bowlers, bowler-batsmen and a swashbuckling wicketkeeper-batsman.The wiry speedster had formed a formidable new-ball pair with Zaheer Khan, bowling out teams even on lifeless tracks. His pace and nagging accuracy would have come handy on this rock-hard wicket, which curator Phil Sotom described as "good as gold." Ishant's indisposition, however, paves the way for either Praveen Kumar or Munaf Patel to find a place in the XI tomorrow.

The team management remains hopeful that the 20-year-old seamer, who has scalped 37 wickets in 25 ODIs, will be ready for the second ODI at Wellington on March 6.India desperately lack a match-winning all-rounder and in Ravindra Jadeja they had one in the making, but the left-hander has returned home after the T20 internationals. His alacrity in the field coupled with his all-round abilities would have been of value to the side.

"Zaheer became very dominating over Rahul last year through the IPL.
It is not a crisis point, but a gentle reminder is needed that Zaheer is there to bowl and Dhoni to captain,
" said Crowe, who was the chief cricket officer of the Bangalore outfit.
"It is only with regards to general gameplan and field placements at any given moment that I am raising this point," Crowe wrote in his column for a website. The former New Zealand captain took strong exception to Zaheer's tantrums on the field and said,
"Zaheer Khan has quite a lot to say on the field. Dhoni needs to be very careful with players like Zaheer who is getting too vocal and animated, otherwise it will start compromising with his own leadership.
"The New Zealander drew a parallel with Rahul Dravid, who was leading the Bangalore Royal Challengers in the inaugural edition of the Indian Premier League and said the former India captain often had to compromise on the field due to Zaheer's antics.

"If the Indians lose quick wickets, they will end up scoring not more than 220-225 but if they preserve wickets,
they have some good hitters, who can easily steer the score past 270-280 which would put New Zealand team under pressure," Akram said.
"India will miss Ishant Sharma, especially if they bowl first because that guy is a wicket-taker and the conditions suit him really well.
There would be seam and bounce and he would have really come in handy,
" said Akram.Wasim Akram also said that though the Kiwis have performed better in the Twenty20 format, but ODIs would be a different ball game.
And with Sachin Tendulkar in the one-day team, India would be a different side."India need to win tomorrow, otherwise the Black Caps who are already high on confidence would create much more problem for the Indians in the series.
"The Indian team has more experience in the 50-over

IN Indian any cricket live match Six Indian players will appear in New Zealand's State Championship in a bid to get some practice ahead of the three-Test series, Niranjan Shah, the Indian team manager has confirmed.VVS Laxman and Rahul Dravid is priceless." India's coach Gary Kirsten felt NZC's gesture to accommodate the players set a good example for other boards.Their participation will be staggered over two rounds - Rahul Dravid, VVS Laxman, Amit Mishra and L Balaji will play the matches between March 6 and 9 while Dhawal Kulkarni and M Vijay will join the competition for the next round, beginning March 13.

There was doubt over their participation because two of the state sides - Canterbury and Auckland - include ICL players and the BCCI's stance on the banned league prevented their players from joining any side that had cricketers from the league.

However the scheduling is such that the Indians will avoid playing alongside or even against ICL players.Auckland and Northern Districts have ICL players - Daryl Tuffey and Hamish Marshall - in their four-day squads but they already have the one permitted overseas player.

It is a return of sorts for Sachin Tendulkar, who hasn't played a game in almost three weeks,
