India continued to accumulate runs after the interval but their 105-run second wicket partnership came to an end when Gambhir (72) edged Chris Martin to Brendon McCullum to leave India 142 for two.

Dravid then reached his 54th Test fifty with his 10th four and he added 16 more before being bowled by Iain O'Brien, who squeezed a delivery between bat and pad to uproot the off stump and leave India 177 for three.

Tendulkar and VVS Laxman made it through to tea with the visitors at 197 for three but Tendulkar had a lucky escape on 13 shortly before the break when Daniel Flynn was unable to take a catch chasing back from midwicket after a mis-timed shot from the right-hander.Jesse Ryder, who hit a maiden Test century yesterday, bowled some tight spells with five maidens in his seven overs which cost just 10 runs.

Laxman also had a let off after tea while on 15 when O'Brien failed to hold on to a difficult chance on the boundary.

But in the first over with the second new ball, the 34-year-old right-hander edged a Martin delivery to Ross Taylor in the slips to depart for 30 having taken India to 238.

It was the final wicket to fall in the day as Tendulkar went on to claim his 52nd Test half-century with a nice cover drive off Martin.

It was tough day for New Zealand's bowlers and in particular Mills, who finished with figures of none for 70 off 15 overs.

Dravid was also happy with his form. "I felt good today. My feet really moved well and I got into right positions through the day. I was scoring at fairly decent clip. But I got a pretty good one at that stage. Even after 60-65 overs, the ball was still seaming a little bit.

"Overall, I am quite satisfied. But it would have been nice to go on and get a big score. It would have helped the team had I probably been not out at the end of the day. That would have been great. But I felt good the way my balance and body was, and the way my feet were moving today," said Dravid, who notched his 54th half century in 132 Tests.

Talking about the wicket he had made 190 and 103 not out in 1998-99 here, Dravid said "It was a long time ago.

Rahul Dravid said big scores did not fascinate him but what satisfies him was contributing to the team's cause.

"It is not really the number of runs or centuries I score now. It is really about if I can make a contribution to a winning team in Test matches in India and abroad. That's what gives me satisfaction," said Dravid, who carved out a classy 66 at Seddon Park here.

Contributing to win satisfies Dravid

"I truly love the game. I have always played this game since I was a young kid. I have loved batting, I have loved being part of victories and making contributions to wins. I think that sort of thing gives me the challenge now.
